The explanation was in the link I posted, but its not in layman's terms. Basically you have to have the right drivers loaded for it to work, and then have to use the right program that works with it has been my experience..
Thnx.

Ok, here is what's in my D620

Make sure the wifi switch on the left side is slid to the front into the 1 position

This is what my /etc/modprobe.d/broadcom-sta-dkms.conf looks like:

Code:
# wl module from Broadcom conflicts with the following modules:
#blacklist b43
blacklist b43legacy
blacklist b44
#blacklist bcma
blacklist brcm80211
blacklist brcmsmac
#blacklist ssb
blacklist wl

Edit yours like that and reboot.

My instructions are simple based on a password only router...
Next, go to Control panel, network, and then select ceni
then select wlan0
then press enter on reconfigure wlan0
press enter on scan
slide up/down to your wifi router and press enter
type your key then tab to accept, press enter
press enter to accept 2nd screen
press enter key to continue after it gets an address (look to see if it did)
press enter on yes to exit

Now try the browser

Wicd doesn't work on this machine if I recall...

Hi thriftee,

at last (!!) it worked and the internal Broadcom board is"singing" the wifi tune once more !

Thanks so much for the persistance and good advice!

One question (if I may - although its slightly off topic a la the internal Broadcom board) ?
Why is it necessary to actively enter the config files to reset them ?

And, for example [just as an example] whilst I was persisting with antix 16.2 I tried Linux Mint 18
and [as it happened] it worked first time with one of my USB wifi sticks [might go back and try the
Broadcom board as well]...... as an example, whereas antix 16.2 would not 'recognise' the same
USB wifi stick at all [as I said at the beginning of my thread] ?

I really don't know how it works, but if I was to guess, it must do some network hardware detection, look at the equivalent of the inxi network output somehow and lookup the hardware it finds, ie the BRCM 4311 and then edit or copy in default setup config files for what it found. But if that's true, why doesn't it overwrite my fixes?

Maybe it only does that if its still original. I also don't know, but maybe the config it created works for some systems but not the D620, or maybe it also works with the D620 using other network software.

So really, what I do know is that what I did works on my D620, and now also yours. Maybe someone else more knowledgeable can point us to something that shows how it works. It would be nice to see it work right out of the box for the next person that comes along, but if nothing else, they might find this thread.

BTW, If I was going to look into it, I'd try it on the 17 beta in case its been fixed, or to try to get it fixed for the future.

I booted it under the 17b3 64 bit beta and wifi works immediately out of the box with wicd. Its nice to see they have it working well in the new version soon to come out.

I see how they have the blacklist setup there is different...
# wl module from Broadcom conflicts with the following modules:
#blacklist b43
blacklist b43legacy
blacklist b44
#blacklist bcma
blacklist brcm80211
blacklist brcmsmac
#blacklist ssb
blacklist wl

I checked and its the same as I had my 16 setup. That makes me feel good __{{emoticon}}__

Thanks for the 17 version data output - I chose the 16.2 version as a well tested version cf"beta" ........... maybe
I should have tried the 17 ........... but now I can wait.

BTW [since we both employ Dell620's] may I ask how to get a desktop"icon" for USB devices when plugged in ? I can 'see'
they are identified as"media" but - automatically - can I change a file somewhere to drop an icon to the desktop ?

Regards ianc

What does rfkill ($>rfkill list wifi) command show? Is this a Windows duel-boot? If so, you may have to go into Windows and turn it on. You may be able to turn it on w/rfkill command.

On the question of mounted drives, if you are using Rox-IceWm, which is the default, you can drag the links to the USB drives onto your desktop from Spacefm, and then it will work whenever that flash drive is plugged in and mounted. If automount is on, that will save the step of mounting them.

There is an old thread on it...
mounting-floppy-usb-etc-t64.html?mobile=desktop

Here is a pic of what it looks like on mine. You can drag them wherever you want on the desktop.

Thanks for the advice [been offline for a week+] ............ I sort of 'get' how this is done, still some modifications needed
to get the system to 'present' as I would prefer [eg: not icons - rather a text list of whats on the USB stick etc.]

Because I keep reusing the same flashdrives, I'm thinking of naming them starting with a 3 character code that begins with 0 (my hard drives start with 1 thru 20 being the partition number) and then suffixed with an abbreviation for what's on it.  I suppose its easiest to live within the limits of the software you are running.  Perhaps there is a way to create a separate icon manually.
