When I became a technology columnist in the mid-1990s, the public Internet was just beginning its first big surge. Back then, I advised my readers to avoid the semi-political, even religious battles that advocates of this or that technology platform seemed to enjoy. Appreciate technology, I urged, for what it is — a tool — and use what works best.

So why am I typing this on a laptop running GNU/Linux, the free software operating system, not an Apple or Windows machine? And why are my phones and tablets running a privacy-enhanced offshoot of Android called Cyanogenmod, not Apple’s iOS or standard Android?

I agree with the sentiment of the author of the article as privacy is gradually eroding. Microsoft's software has so many cleverly hidden backdoors for the NSA and other spy agencies to spy on people and Google's software tracks your moves so that ads get displayed based on your browsing history or even from the content in your emails. Linux has none of that baked in and there are tools available for Linux that can help keep these evils at bay!

Yep makes a lot of sense.
I really love the fact that if the computer does not function the way you think the tool should, CHANGE IT!
The ability to modify and tweak everything to work as needed is great! I can not think how many times I have modified sockets, wrenches, screwdrivers, etc so that they would work better for my needs

Interesting that phone wise he went with an off shoot of android. I did not even know that there were such hardened branches. I used to love android. I still like it, but find it has become quite fragile. The security of it is very concerning as well. As to I phones, I can never get to liking them as they are just way too limited in the options and when I find an app that can fix my issue with missing options they always seem to cost an arm and a leg.

In the past I used to use an old blackberry phone, then android as it allowed me to do more things. (really considering the fact that I had a pearl.... ) However after blackberry came out with the new phones there is honestly no better phone I can think of! Extremely stable, everything plays and views great, the usability is superb ( everything just seemed natural), typing is just as easy as making a call, good security, etc. There is just so much I like about it the list would be far too great for a post __{{emoticon}}__ .

Overall I feel just as happy ( at home? )with the new blackberry as with Linux / antix on my computer. There are some minor issues in both but it is pretty bad when the only thing you can really complain about is the default theming __{{emoticon}}__ . Both just work for my needs and both allow me to do what I need / like to do quickly and easily.

Bitjam,

Thanks

As far as Search Engines go, I have used DuckDuckGo and Dogpile to keep those nosey neighbors out of my business.

ok, I'll give those a try.

I have always hated the"take over the world" games, too, whether it was IBM, MS or Google trying to do it, once it gets to where the competition dries up and there are no longer choices, you are at their mercy.

Apple has been terrible in that regard, since the first Mac's at least, IMO, because they have always tried to hide everything and make it difficult to do anything they didn't provide, so literally, I'm at the point where I won't buy Apple anything, MS anything, or IBM anything. I don't think I've ever bought anything from Google except one electronic book, but yes, I can see where they are making lots of money off people paying to see what I looked for or clicked on, and I don't like that....

Doesn't anyone think the other 58 people there have a good case to go after them legally?

Ok, the 2 that were pretending to be judges, that's one thing, but I fail to see how that is grounds to detain and search and seize possessions of 58 other people.

But what do I know. I still think the Constitution is the law of the land...

Something about the 14th ammendment and"emergency powers".

I'd cut and paste but I'm having problems doing that right now.

duckduckgo keeps coming up with British results, which would be fine if I was in the UK, but keeps leading me on"wild goose chases" because I'm in the US.

I went to their setup and changed the region to US and saved it, and tried the search again, but got the same UK oriented results.

I guess I will try dogpile next, but given the name, I am not"holding my breath"
