Hi

I am a windows user and have been dabbling with Antix over the last few months. I have 2 desktops that have been rescued via freecycle.
One is a x86 P4 with 256mb of RAM and has cdrw, floppy and 4xUSB.
The other is a P3 with either 256 or 512 or ram, can't recall much else about it other than it is a Compaq ipaq small form factor PC and that it seems to have issues - that said, I have installed Antix to its 6gb hard drive and for surfing and email it is fine.

I am a student and I have to write - a lot - and need to churn out about 70,000 words over the next 6 months. I will need to print and read some of this along the way. I have an old HP Laserjet2100m which is fine and works with Antix.

Thing is, I need to use a few Windoze applications so I have found myself moving over from the p3 with antix installed to the p4, installing Windows 2k (as XP wouldn't install!?) so that I can write on it and use the applications that I need to use, and then using a Live CD to surf/email and saving downloads for windoze onto a usb stick, same with documents.

To be frank, it is a pain in the ass.
I can't work like this without swearing a lot.

What I'd like to do is
get Antix installed properly
dual boot it with Win2k
OR
install Antix only and employ WINE to run my other applications.

SO, what do I need to know, have to try before I can safely say that these apps will work with WINE&Antix - they have to work or there is no point me wiping windoze off.

I can print under antix using cups just dandy

I need to know how to install stuff in Antix using synaptic and how to get WINE running

I have successfully downloaded & unzipped stuff in Antix on the other machine but was buggered if I could install it and get it working/runnng

cheers in advance

You might want to mention what those essential Windows applications are. It's possible that there are native Linux applications that would do the same job, so you wouldn't have to dual boot or rely on Wine. It's amazing how much Linux stuff is out there. (But I've had good luck with both dual booting and Wine.)

You should be able to search your app to see if it will work or haw to get it to work. It would be nice to know what you need.

To install wine or any app use Synaptic via the menu or apt-get in a terminal.

Here's basically what I did: I started by installing a second hd in both of my desktops: hda was for winxxx and hdb was for linux. After a while I realized that I only needed winxxx to run my teacher software. So I took one box to work and left one at home. The one at work is set up as above and the one at home is strictly linux. On hda I have antix and a slackware-based distro, and hdb is more of a mass storage - mostly games. Also, I took an old hd and bought a case for it; I use to backup my linux partitions when I reinstall, etc.

In your case, I wouldn't install linux and win2000 on the 6 gig hd - it will be too small for both os's. You may want to put the 6 gig hd into your other box. There is software for accessing winxxx under linux and linux under winxxx. So having the two drives may make transferring data easier.

40 gb - big enough
I've partitioned it into 2 x 20gb and installed W2k onto one of them

The applications in question are
NEW NOVELIST (v1)

it is all software to do with writing (novels) and the transferring of text & .txt files from my Alphamsart Neo writing machine

I will most likely ditch the p3 with the 6gb drive if I can get the p4 up and running as it has to be for my needs

I'm not sure about all your apps but, just so you know, I had ywriter running fine under Wine. And the guy who develops all the Spacejock stuff claims it's all Linux compatible with Wine.
