I've been trying to get a web cam operational. I know the webcam works because camorama can access it and take stills. Camorama won't do audio and video though. Normaly cheese would do the trick but it won't start. When I start it from a terminal this is the message I get. Any ideas would be appreciated, Thanks!

Just wondering if you have nomodeset in your kernel line of /boot/grub/menu.lst.
If so. It may be the root cause of error.
Howdy and Welcome jaman39.

Thanks for the welcome! And thanks for looking at my problem. I've posted what I think is the relevant portion of /boot/grub/menu.lst. I didn't see anything in there about nomodeset in the kernel line." nouveau.modeset=0" is the only thing I see that even resembles that. Keep in mind I have no idea what this stuff does !
Code: Select all

I just mentioned it because I read it on a gentoo forum post with a similar problem with yours.
Your grub entry looks ok since4 that is a stock grub entry, (no custom boot options in it like nomodeset).
Post the output next of
and after that is posted. Post also the output of
so we can see /etc/apt/sources.list you are using also.
Another question. Did you do as root in terminal or in root terminal
right after your install. It is the first thing required before installing anything like applications in synaptic after a fresh install so all packages are the most current in synaptic packaged manager.
I have cheese installed on all my netbooks that have a built in webcam in AntiX and never ran into a problem like yours is why I ask.

In reverse order, sort of. I tried cheese both as user and as root.
I ran update minutes after install with the default repos.

Running inxi -r yeilds
Thanks again! Your helping me set up christmas gift for my girlfriends son. A working web cam is something a kid couldmake use of.

Try removing cheeze and all configuration files in synaptic. So you can start out fresh I guess. Then reinstall cheeze again.
I see nothing wrong anywhere except for the error message which I don't know how to interpret. You might want to check into using gucview instead of cheese also.

The >=2.3 means that it must be that version or greater for cheese to work. I gotta a sneaky suspicion your libs are too old since I bet you have not done adep: libc0.1 (>= 2.3)

We’re getting closer!! Tried re-installing cheese. Still no go. I installed guvcview. This one starts. I can see the video change the resolution and so forth. It crashes when I try to capture though.

Try seeing if updating ffmpeg in synaptic fixes that.

ffmpeg wasn't even installed. Lol. so I installed it. Didn't change anything though cheese still won't start and guvcview crashes when I try to capture. Same error shown.

Ok. Time for the big guns. Post the ouput put first of
when done type in
the -s simulates a dist-upgrade without installing anything. I just want to see what will be upgraded since your install. Put the readout in code tags like I have been doing for you (my edits) because it makes read outs easier to read on my small screen.
Edit: I am at a loss on why you are having so much trouble and I am not. I just hooked up a ancient aptitek pencam to my m/c shop desktop and used vlc to open the camera. I did not even need to reboot or do any special stuff.
All I can figure is that I have upgraded my install regular like after a initial install.

Just to let you know after I posted the outputs you requested I ran “apt-get dist-upgrade” yet again. It did upgrade a number of packages to my surprise. (I did the same thing thru synaptic just days ago.) Then I tried guvcviewer yet again. Still it would crash when I tried to capture. So I took a look at the video file you posted and noticed there was no sound. So I got the idea to try without sound. This time no problem. I recorded a video without any problem. This narrowed it down to sound settings. After trying all the options I found I could get a good recording using PCM uncompressed (16 bit) for audio settings. The webcam still will not work on the testmycam site so no web based stuff, cheese will not start. (uninstall is my solution he he) but at least I can record a video with it. Hurray !!
I think I’ll pack it up now and let the young man who will receive it for xmass complete the job. It will be a good learning experience for him. He says he wants to be a programmer and learn how to create video games. I’m not sure he understands the difference between playing and creating games. I think he better learn some computer basics first. This will be his first computer.

to answer buttcoffee's question.
might bring it up in terminal even for a laptop (some/most laptop webcams are usb internal connected).
I had no mic hooked up to the desktop when I shot the video in vlc. Just the cheapo external apitek pencam. So I took a look at the video file you posted and noticed there was no sound
Sounds like a good plan. __{{emoticon}}__I think I’ll pack it up now and let the young man who will receive it for xmass complete the job.He says he wants to be a programmer

Two suggestions
1.Do you have firmware-linux-nonfree installed? If not, try installing that and rebooting.
2. If the above doesn't work, downgrade cheese from cheese 3.2 to cheese 2.30. Cheese2.30 is in the squeeze repository
