Am using antiX for the first time, so I'm not exactly sure what to expect, but during an apt-get dist upgrade, I'm getting"Warning - the following packages can not be authenticated" and then something else about athentication overridden.
Is this normal? If not, what should I do to fix it?
First impression - great distro! This is a lot of fun. Haven't managed to break anything yet and I've already enabled the sid repositories.

That warning is ok/normal.
Make sure you read the other warnings that may come up such as what is to be removed.
Have fun!

Just installed and already moving to sid. Sounds like something I would do. Wait a minute, I did do that.
welcome to antiX.
If your going to use sid I would recommend using the smxi script(already installed) to keep things in control.

These past few months have been a great time to experiment between Debian Stable, Debian Testing, and Debian Sid. I've never seen them so close in terms of what software is available (though there are considerable differences between Stable and Sid) and I've never seen it easier to move from one to another. This has been a great time to try switching to Sid in antiX. I think I still have at least one instance out there, probably on my old desktop, that has an antiX with Sid - probably from the M7.2 release. It worked great.
M8.0 has been excellent. Both M7.5 and M8.0 are very close to the ideal for me in a system with a fast, small footprint. I have not encountered a single issue so far with the M8.0 release, so when you are ready to release it, I sure have not seen anything that would create any reason to question that decision. Could be that M8.0 beats SimplyMEPIS 8.0 out of the gate!
