This wiki may be of some use to you.
========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dell_Inspiron_6400#Multimedia_Buttons_.26_Fn_Hotkeys"
linktext was:"https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/De ... Fn_Hotkeys"
====================================
The arch wiki is a great place to go for information on linux configuration in general as the arch methodology generally means their users have to configure everything themselves.

If you mean to control the sound, pause / play, stop, next, previous etc you can add them to your hotkeys in vlc.
To do:
open vlc
menu --> run
type: vlc
press: ok
tools --> preferances
press: hotkeys
double click: the item which you would like to change (EG: for play, double click"play" then make the wanted key stroke. It may take a couple of times to get right __{{emoticon}}__ )
