I have (the infamous) Radeon 7500 video built into a laptop. This is no longer supported on many Linux distributions / xorg to spite being a P4 with a Gig of RAM - far faster than most tablets out there and with a much larger / useable screen - yet ... Thank Goodness for AntiX, Puppy, DSL, and a few others. You Guys Rock !!

But I still have a bit of a problem. When I start AntiX from Live-CD or Disk, after the initial Grub/Boot screen, I get the usual Linux console 'starting kernel ...' and then a temporary"white screen of death." During the White-Screen, the keyboard caps-lock *does* work - no kernel-panic happening. After going into screen-saver mode (blank screen / back-light off), when I move the mouse or click a key, I get the Login screen.

How can I gain immediate access upon boot and avoid the 10-minute delay?

My Xorg-log is attached, with some junk trimmed out and a few notes added.

I have"nomodeset" in my startup, and removing that option from grub (on other Linux flavors) will *cause* a permanent white-screen of death, complimented with a non-responsive keyboard. Yet my xorg.log shows KMS is enabled at some point? Also, It also goes into Vesa and then back out later each boot? It gets the resolution right, in the end, but should I just specify this in an xorg.conf to avoid all the probing?

Also, note the lid-switch is not working (tested and as reported in xorg.log). Perhaps I could achive the same effect as the screen-suspend with that button if it worked?

I don't see an attached log file.

If you're running the LiveCD then you can specify the X resolution with the"xres=WWWxHHH" boot option. where WWW is the width and HHH is the height. You can also specify a video driver with the"xdrvr=XXX" boot option. These option won't work on a installed system but they should carry over from the Live system when you do an install. If you specify either option then we will create an xorg.conf file for you. This is what carries those options over when you do an install.

You will probably still need to select the"safe" video mode from the"F5 Video Mode" menu which adds the nomodeset boot parameter. You should certainly try the"very safe" option from that same menu (without specifying xdrvr or xres). We won't make an xorg.conf file in this case so you get narrower range of vertical and horizontal frequencies. It will be less likely to get the maximum resolution but if the WSoD is caused by a sync problem then this might avoid it.

It might be helpful if you showed us the output of"inxi -F". I'd also like to see what is in the .xsession-errors* file(s) in your home directory.

After going into screen-saver mode (blank screen / back-light off), when I move the mouse or click a key, I get the Login screen.
This is very strange. It seems like there are two problems but maybe they have a common cause.

When the WSoD occurs, you can try logging into a virtual terminal with <Ctrl><Alt><F2>. You can switch back to X-windows with <Ctrl><Alt><F7>. If you are getting dumped to a graphical login manager (SLiM) on the Live system then this means X and/or the window manager has crashed or failed to start. In this case it would be good to make a copy of the .xsession-errors file and the Xorg log file. OTOH it is normal to first get the graphical login screen when booting an installed system which means X is probably not crashing.

You can increase the resolution of the virtual terminal with the"vga" boot option."vga=795" will give you 1280x1024 and"vga=792" will give you 1024x768.

With a Gig of RAM you should be able to use the"toram" feature on the LiveCD which will make it run very fast. There is a delay when you boot while almost the entire LiveCD gets copied into RAM. You can either type in"toram" directly or select it from the"F4 Options" menu to make this happen.

My guess is that it is a sync problem. You may need an xorg.conf with a custom mode line. We don't create this automatically. If you want to experiment starting X in different ways, one trick is use the"3" boot parameter which will prevent us from starting X automatically. Then log into a virtual console as the demo user (or the normal non-root user on an installed system) and run:

Code: Select all

xint
which should start X-windows with the default windows manager. When you log out of the window manager then X-windows will stop.

You can move between virtual consoles with <Ctrl><Alt><Fn> where n can be 1 -- 6. You can also move to"adjacent" virtual consoles with <Alt><Left-Arrow> and <Alt><Right-Arrow>.

It's possible that just switching to a virtual console and then switching back to X-windows will fix the sync problem without you having to wait for screen-saver mode. This is not an ideal solution but it would be a significant improvement.

Thank you for the very detailed reply and suggestions.

I have tried the Cntl-Alt-Fn and alt-left / alt-right trick, with no response - WSoD persists. Cntl-Alt-Backspace also has no effect. The Power Button, OTOH, does initiate a clean-shutdown (single-touch, not holding it down until forced-shutdown).

When I tried booting into level-3, I still got the WSoD.

With the screen working, I can Cntl-Alt into the terminal windows and back, but these terminal windows are hi-res screens - not 80-column terminals. Perhaps I can change that default?

In all cases, I can see a quick preview of the higher-resolution text-screen before the white splotch takes over the monitor. On some returns from screen-off, I also see a quick view of the screen prior to the white-splotch spreading over all.

One quicker workaround I have found. If I hit the Fn-Sleep (F3) button, the system goes into suspend. When I press a key to 'wake' it, I get my screen back.

I do recall that on an attempted Linux-install years ago, that toggling the lid-switch worked to remedy a WSoD. Perhaps getting that functionality would provide a cleaner work-around.

The resulting screen-resolution is correct, though I agree with your suspicion of sync, and would like to create a modeline setting for quicker start of X. I have an old xorg.conf, which was working on CentOS before the xorg-update (to a ~2010-release, which corresponds with the time-frame of posts from old-radeon users on other flavors ).

Yes, my log will not attach. I will paste them here:
