I am using Firefox 28 that came with MX-14. I want to update it to the latest version 31. When I go to update it, it keeps searching for the server to get the updates from. What should I do to fix this? Everything else is working great except for Firefox.

or run the static Firefox bz2 download like I do in AntiX 11 box in /opt.

You have to run firefox as root though in my AntiX 11 install to upgrade through the browser.

The firefox in MX is hosted by the mepis community repo. If you go into the mx-package-installer (or metapackage-installer, depending on your exact mx version), and choose to install firefox, it will update to the latest version hosted in the repo. The built in updater in firefox will not work.

Thanks for the replay but I am somewhat daft when it comes to the MX package installer. Where can I locate this and how do I just install Firefox only?

Thanks so much (as always) __{{emoticon}}__

just open up the whisker menu and start type"mx" you'll see all the mx utilities.

if you are using the original 14 (rather than 14.2) release, then you'll need to type in metapackage-installer as the original 14 release used that app instead of the later mx package installer.

once you have that, open up the browser list (click on the little arrow) and then the checkbox for firefox.

Thanks! I totally forgot about the mx utilities. I already have Firefox 28 and Iceweasel installed.

Hi Dolphin,

I am using AntiX 13.2 stable and I want to update Firefox (iceweasel) to 36.0.1. I already downloaded the Firefox version and it is sitting in my Xarchiver archive manager. It reads"firefox- 36.0.1. tar.bz2". I also have meta package installer. How exactly do I install this update with out any hitches? I just want to update the browser, not the entire distro.

Thanks in advance.

The way I keep iceweasel up to date, automatically, is to use this repo:

Code: Select all

deb http://mozilla.debian.net/ wheezy-backports iceweasel-release
I put it in / etc/apt/sources.list.d/various.list.

Run an"apt-get update" and then"apt-get install iceweasel" and it should update to the latest version of the browser without updating the entire distro.

If you want to stick to that firefox tar.bz2 that you downloaded, just unpack the tar.bz2 into its own folder. You will then run firefox from that folder. You'll need to make your own menu entry if you use this method and want to be able to launch from the menu. I have done this in the past, and when I did I just put firefox in a folder in my home folder (~/.local/applications)

May I consider Iceweasel updated now after all of this? The reason for all of this is that my browser (iceweasel) has been crashing my PC lately (just suddenly turning it off), especially when I'm on a high speed site like Facebook or one of the online news services with a lot of flash. I updated the flash player (I think), so it probably goes back to updating the browser correctly. This started ocurring only recently. Please let me know.

it updated to the latest extended support version in the repos. if you want the absolute latest available you'll need to add the repo I posted and repeat the apt-get update aND apt-get install ice weasel again.
