Let me state right from the start that my linux knowledge is very limited. I have a very low resource panasonic cf27 laptop and run mx14 on it. However I have a few spare hard disks in caddies and like to experiment with different distros. I have gone back to Antix 8.5. Now this runs faster and better than any other distro I have tried. For example you can actually get you tube to work albeit very slow. It has never worked on any other distro.
Is it viable to carry on with 8.5. Or is it too old to be secure. When I try to upgrade in synaptic I get a series of errors as I think the repos are dead. Can I update it. I have read several thread on updating 8.5 but they are over my head I'm afraid so any help in simple terms would be appreciated please.

Even if you managed to update it (which is extremely unlikely), I think you will find that it will then become 'heavier' since the newer stuff in itself is 'heavier' re more RAM intensive.

Yeah, I am probably one of the last members running a up to date AntiX 11 base install.
I run SeaMonkey in it in /opt and update Seamonky using then in toolbar help>check for updates

My box is a 1gig ram (shows in conky 800MB but I bet some goes to video). Anti is right about the slowdown.
Run UZBL browser on that Cf-27. It is in the package manager.
It works in youtube.
launches it from terminal.

My Panasonic Cf-48 still sits on the shelf. It has a bad LCD cable from inverter to back of LCD screen. I might CRT it later when one of My other newer gear breaks.
My Amrel RT 786 EX has been accumilaing shelf life also.

Thanks for your replies. I'll stay with it as it is and check out UXBL. Would it be possible to use mx14 with a lighter window manager. Is my security compromised by using 8.5. I am on line through a wireless router.

I tried to install uxbl but get errors

When I went ahead and installed it failed with these errors.

I think Im on a hiding to nothing here.

Usually a apt-get update should be done after a fresh install to get current software.

Sorry if this is an off the wall question, but why not use an newer version of antix? Antix 13 is the current release version but there is also version 14 in development that could be used.
