With Persistence

Figured I would see what all the fuss was about with Unity and Ubuntu 11.10. Made a persistent live usb of 11.10 and have only booted it up on my gear that has gobs of ram and wifes dual core acer aspire windows 7 Laptop. Unity is sure a strange creature. Lots of clicks to get to a terminal even. But I just booted this today. So I don't know all the short cuts yet.

wanna see something freaky

Code: Select all

~$ free
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 2035688 1682776 352912 0 161992 1114224

Swap: 3196896 0 3196896
Glad AntiX is my Bro.

Here is the shot

Feels like I am running Windows 7 (though I have no experience running Windows 7 or Vista for that matter)
All I installed was Java and Flash. Pretty much scared of filling up the pendrive. Took a while to boot also (since not a real install). Looks like when Ubuntu 12 LTS comes out. The minimal install iso is the way to go for a half decent Ubuntu desktop. IceUbuntu or Fluxubuntu or both.

Sheesh. I had to install gawk before inxi would run in this.

Now that kind of reminds me of Windows 8's desktop...just as freaky and a full Ubuntu image can take up most of a pendrive for sure!

Now would be cool if there was an AntiX respin for x86_64 __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__

Is that Unity 3d or Unity 2d? I just looks like it was designed for a phone or tablet, not a desktop or laptop

I'm surprised a lot of people are still using ubuntu and that Unity garbage. I wonder if it's better than gnome 3 because gnome 3 is awful, imho

It looked to act as 3d on the wifes laptop. I just ran the defaults on bootup. It is gone now on that pendrive. Running Semplice on it now.

Ubuntu is still such a pig anyway, but semplice is quite nice and simple so it is quite promising

I just tried ubuntu 11.10 on my flash drive. I got it to work and installed something for my wireless, then it asked to reboot for some odd reason and when it rebooted, it broke. I had it setup for persistant on my flash drive.

That unity crap seemed like a huge hassle just to do simple stuff when I played with it. Is there even a terminal installed on it because I couldn't find it in those god awful menus.

Gotta use the search bar to find terminal in menus. A script to run a script. Like grub 2. __{{emoticon}}__

There is probably a keyboard shortcut but I did not stick around long enough to find it.

Ubuntu 11.10 is just meant for the Windoze crowd...and my mom likes it though as she's no computer guru and just clicks an icon to get online.

unity is garbage, i like the"dock thing" on the left but that's it. it's stupid to make a desktop for netbooks and then simply enlargen it for a normal dekstop... but whatever, i stick with antix...

and rokytnji (or anybody else), in case you're still interested...
some unity keyboard shortcuts:

I been trying out Fedora 16. I find it more visually appealing than 11.10 and seems a bit more intuitive ...to me.
It also seems pretty zippy as a live usb.

I just don't know how to do much with it yet, like add flash or use yum. It also seems to have some special effects already enabled.

Edit: I put 11.10 on a flash drive and using it now. I can't really say that I don't like it. It seems to work well here. I miss right clicking on the desktop to get my menu. Same situation with Fedora of course. I have to admit that the software center is nice. It is also nice that it is"debian".

Overall, I think I like Fedora 16 a bit more. Nice to have a choice. To use or not to use. That is the question...Good thing. __{{emoticon}}__
