Hello. I am new to Linux. I just installed Mint 17.3 successfully on an old Dell laptop.
I am now trying it on my Sony Vaio VGN-FJ150 that has (had) XP on it, The install DVD is the same one I used on the Dell, I did a 5mdsum on it and it checks out fine
When it first boots to the DVD for install, I get an error that says something about an IRQ on the black screen before it starts loading, then I get the LM install screen, I choose install and it starts, I can get to the screen that lets me chose what options, I choose install and wait...
I cannot catch all of the IRQ error screen it goes by too fast to read it. It does say IRQ 9
I have also Tried Lubuntu and I get the same problem
It was suggested that I try antiX and that leads me here as it is still hanging
these are the specs on the laptop
attached are pics of the place hangs on antiX, and on Mint
Any help would be appreciated!!!

Are you being patient enough for it to finish loading?
Your sony specs look close to similar on what my panasonic cf-48 laptop uses
Have you checked out the videos for installation? Runwiththe dolphin has covered boot cheat codes in his instructional videos.

Hour is plenty time. Might need to run a lens cleaner disk like I do once in a while because I live in the desert where dust is a problem.
If you have the skill set like I do.
Make a PLOP boot cd.

Then make a AntiX live usb (use the 15 iso not the 15.1) 32 bit. Use the plop cd to boot off of usb drive to rule out dirty lens cd drive problems.

I think I understand. But I do not think I can boot to a USB drive, I do not see an option in the BIOS unless I am overlooking something

I would try a couple of things things.
1. Try enabling the acpi=off boot code (in the F4 live menu, see attached screen shot).
2. Try safe and (if that doesn't work) failsafe video modes.

one thread per problem is a good rule of thumb. when you post, put the contents of the following command in your post, wrapped in code tags.
this will give a general overview of your hardware. Takes a little of the guess work out.
Code: Select all
inxi -F

If your intel wireless info is correct like you originally posted, and matches in inxi like dolphin_oracle indicated. Intel wireless chip like in my panasonic.
It should just work right out of the box after wpa password is thrown into your wireless router.
Hell. My Verizon Jet Pack mobile modem connects just fine after a passkey entered and my Iphone 5S when
tethered as a wifi hot spot also when I tell my Iphone to trust the gear connected and wifi hotspot turned on on the phone.
