Awsome live CD! So I attempted to install on a completely blanked out hard drive. During the install grub installation failed, giving a message that I could complete the install then boot from the cd and repair the installation. Tried to do that but got the exact same error message. It wouldn't allow me to install grub to to either the MBR or root, with or without update boot menu selected. Any suggestions? Probably something simple I should know.

Probably the mbr section didn't get created.
You will probably have to install again. Use gparted to set up the partitions before installation and it should create an area where grub will be installed.
Then you can select that when installing antiX.

99% of the time you've stumbled upon a glitch on the CD. Reburn the CD at a slower speed. I always use 4x burning speed for a live CD. Got"burned" (no pun intended) for too many times getting impatient and using 8x or higher.

Sounds to me like it's probably a bad burn. If you saved your .iso just burn it again at a slower speed (16 or less) and give it another shot.
Hope it works for you.

whoa what a fast forum! To moron and dieselbenz: I appreciate that but I burned at 8x on a 24x burner in a fairly newish imac. I also checked the checksum of the iso file. I'll try anti's advice and report back. Unfortunately, the iso file is at, uh mm, work.

4x max. These are highly compressed data files. I've thrown away way too many ruined CDs over the last few years because I tried to burn a live CD at 8x -- and I've probably burned a copy of every Linux distro out there for the last half-decade.

Must be the mid-west atmospheric pressure. Ha! 16x always (thus far) works fine for me. Go figure.........

My hardware is almost exclusively cast off by someone. I rebuild (and normally give away w/ Linux installed) systems as a hobby. My CD burners were probably state of the art in 1990.

I run a four computer network in my house. The"kick butt" is the 1 gig Gateway system that my step-daughter bought (out of total disgust as what I was giving her to use). The next fastest is 800 mhz processor (wife's running Mepis 6.5). I am running a web server

and composing this on my 600 mhz system (PCLinuxOS 2007).

Then my laptop: a sizzling 266 mhz w/ 160 mb RAM. Running antiX of course.

diesel,
I think that's great! I like to see old hardware given a second life. That's what originally attracted me to AntiX. I ran MepisLite 3x on a 366 MHz / 128 MB ThinkPad that I got off eBay a while back. I got a few more in the 750 MHz to 1024 MHz range while they were relatively cheap. I think eBay sellers have caught on, though. A P3 1 Ghz laptop that went for about $150 a year ago will run closer to $250 now. There are still bargains to be had now and again, though.

Anyway, we've drifted far enough away from the original topic here.
Keep rescuing those old computers. Later, my Greek-speaking redneck WVa - Iowa internet friend.

BTW
My son just moved to Capon Springs a couple of weeks ago.

Growing increasingly Yuppie. Hope son brought a trunk load of NC cash. But, a nice place to raise a family.

WV: a great place to grow up and then move away from. I did. When I was graduated from high school in 1970, it was Vietnam, coal mines, or university. I took the third road, and out of state.

As my hero Lt. Columbo used to say on the tv show,"One more thing." I disagree with the"Anyway, we've drifted far enough away from the original topic here" statement.

What is happening here goes way beyond antiX -- it is a coming together of individuals with a common interest.

Computers are great. They join individuals who would not otherwise meet one another, In fact, I hosted a party (

) a couple of weekends ago for members of an antique Benz newsgroup. They came from New Mexico, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and several points in-between to meet and greet.

Truth be told, I met my wife while chatting in a place just like this.

So ... I am sensing that what anti started as a"how is antiX" might morph into something much bigger. .... But of course, I do play PowerBall two times a week too.

I did get antiX installed to a hard drive this morning. I think the problem last night was I had a bad hard drive. This morning I tried booting with antiX-M7 cd, systemrescuecd, and parted magic 1.9 all gave IO errors. Stuck in a different hard drive and all is well. Thanks for all of the help!javascript:emoticon(':D')

Think that other hard drive is trash or is there any other trick I can try on it?
