Hi!

I have been running antiX on a 64 bit laptop (an ASUS X55U) without any fuss.

I finally got around to trying to install the 32 bit version on an older (but made to last) Toshiba Satellite A100.
I got to the BIOS to switch the boot order. That's when things started looking a bit odd.

Instead of showing something like"Kingston Data Traveller" for my USB stick, all I saw was"USB Memory".
So, I put that at the top of the boot order.
But my USB stick was ignored and it went straight to booting up off the old OS (Peppermint 7) off the driver.

I also tried live installs from USB sticks with Lubuntu and Mint 18.2 Xfce.
But I got the same result: USB stick ignored for the lot.

I'm not sure if the hard drive in this Toshiba is relevant or not.
The hard drive is a Kingston 120 GB solid state drive.
I popped that in because the old HDD was failing.

Can anyone tell me if this might be a hardware issue specific to this older 32 bit computer having an SSD?
Or maybe if it's a GRUB issue? I was trying to install antiX 16.1 full.

Thanks in advance!

check and see if you can choose the usb device as a hard disk. I have to do that on one of my machines.

I guess this did not work?

Might try a different usb port or usb stick. I have even booted usb sticks on Phoenix bios so old there was no bios option for usb. I used my PLOP boot floppy and and my usb 1.1 port on My Panasonic CF-48 laptop to run AntiX live and then install off of usb. My Amrel 786 EX laptop also has a old Phoenix bios that I updated via a Floppy Disk and now it has a bios option in the menu for usb boot on it.

I just mention the Amrel because maybe there is a bios update for your Toshiba A100. Search Youtube for Upgradeing Bios via a USB stick if interested.

Lastly. I sometimes have to roll up my sleeves and just use elbow grease to get the results I am looking for like so.

Then sift through all the damn useless urls till I find what I need. Maybe you will get lucky and someone with a A100 will post. But I always prepare for the worst and then post what I did to solve my issues. Can't say if if it is hardware problem <usb port damaged> . SSD drive though should not be effecting this ,as It is a red herring thought process < My Opinion>. Is there a CD drive on this laptop and have you tried going that route?

My Amrel and Panasonic usb boot adventures was just a proof of concept for me. I was always capable of booting off of cd drive on either unit.
PLOP CD also sits on my CD rack besides floppy disks.

Maybe try a different brand of pendrive.

(I think I remember reading somewhere that a Kingston pendrive wasn't recognised as bootable on someone else's machine.)

Run into that and a new pendive was the answer.
