Hello All,

I am quite an issue with my video card. The machine boots and runs just fine, except that the video resolution doesn't expand to the edges of the monitor of the laptop. I have tried chaning the resolutionto 1280x1024, but I am not able to go bigger than 800x600. I'm not new to linux, been using it for a while, but I am new to Antix.

Machine Specs:
IBM Thinkpad R30
CPU: 1.0GHz P3
RAM: 384 MB PC1330
Hard Drive: 20GB IDE
Video Card: Trident Microsystems Cyberblade il
Display 800x600 @ 60 Hertz
X.org 1.9.5

Any ideas?

Edit: No. No Trident chip on my IBM A22m

Code: Select all

Not sure since your original inxi readout was next to illegible with all the cruft inserted in between relevant info but I think you are just using the generic vesa driver and not the trident driver.

I have to go right now. Hopefully some other member will tell you what to do.

That was the exact data I got when I ran the command inxi -F What I did was run this command inxi -F >system.txt

How do I enable the Trident driver over the vesa driver? I'm not new to Linux, just new to Antix.

Greetings davem,

I'm not a guru to antiX M11 like master rokytnji.
HOWEVER .. I had a similar issue like yours with an older laptop.
I tried to get the laptop's reolution past the 800x600 resolution.

What worked for me were two things:
1. Primarily ensuring that you've a 'DefaultDepth' in your Screen section in xorg.conf file
2. Ensuring that you've two parameters in your Monitor section which are:
  • HorizSync
    VertRefresh
After each of the two parameters above there should be a value for each (separated by atleast one space in between)

I went through other options such as utilizing the gtf command at the command prompt
that returned values (string) that could be included into the xorg.conf file section.
I've placed two links below for your referencing:

Code: Select all

http://linux.die.net/man/1/gtf
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=129379
Just in case the two links above were to go dead in the future, the GTF example is below:

Code: Select all

gtf 1024 768 75
RESULT:
# 1024x768 @ 75.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 60.15 kHz; pclk: 81.80 MHz
  Modeline"1024x768_75.00" 81.80 1024 1080 1192 1360 768 769 772 802 -HSync +Vsync
The 'Modeline' line would be copied and pasted into the Monitor section of xorg.conf

NOTE: This example addresses resolution 1024x768 @ 75Hz refresh rate... PLEASE enter your needed values.
If the gtf command works for you then AMEN !!! ... however in my case this was not the case.
The assurance that the values for HorizSync and VertRefresh were correct and then a restart of X worked.

I pray that this helps you immensely and that you're seeing past 800x600 ... BELIEVE you me
I know just how much of a pain this could be.

Take care and all the best, davem.

I went to the /etc/X11 directory to look for and adjust the xorg.conf file. However, I do not have that file. I have a directory /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d There is a file in the X11 directory called xorg.conf.in but I do not have an xorg.conf file. I have edited this file before (when using Fedora and Ubuntu). By default, does Antix install an xorg.conf file, or does that file have to be created?

Ok. That explains why I have never ever since I have been a Antix user that I had never seen a readout like that in the forums. __{{emoticon}}__ You will have to cut me some slack I hope. I insert personality in my posts. I do this with new users and everyone else because I am a uneducated Tattooed Linux Biker. It is my way to loosen up a member so they open up and post more details in a thread instead of being shy. I run my motorcycle repair shop business like this also. I am a chatty kind of guy. Not a withdrawn type.

You do alright FreeOS-LuvR in Antix because from your posts you know how to search and move around and edit stuff also.

Ok. Down to nuts and bolts.
I went to the /etc/X11 directory to look for and adjust the xorg.conf file. However, I do not have that file
You won't have a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file yet because Debian and Antix took it out on default installs.
How do I enable the Trident driver over the vesa driver? I'm not new to Linux, just new to Antix
As root in terminal. Sux to root. Then password.

Code: Select all

apt-get update
Let it finish updating.

Code: Select all

apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-trident
But before you even try that.

Lets first see if it is installed already. Remember my"apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-video-trident" command I showed in my earlier post.
Run that in terminal to see. If not installed (though I will be highly suprised if not because it should be installed along with)

Code: Select all

$ apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-core
xserver-xorg-core:
  Installed: 2:1.11.3.901-2
  Candidate: 2:1.11.3.901-2
  Version table:
*** 2:1.11.3.901-2 0
        500 http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ testing/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Which pulls in a lot of video drivers on install. Anyhows. I am also going to show my kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst so you can compare my kernel options to yours in case that is interfering with default resolution also.

Code: Select all

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-3.3.3-antix.1-486-smp root=UUID=a880708b-8fc3-4caf-89a8-54cdabff1813 ro
We also have xrandr in Antix. Here is my readout on the old IBM A22m.

Code: Select all

Hope you have fun learning Antix. You sound more knowledgeable than me. Approach this distro with the knowledge that because we are lean and mean. One needs to manully do certain things because we are minimalists, (though I go hog wild sometimes on my bigger, stronger computers). I never ran rpm distros since I decended in rpm hell trying to run Mandriva ver? (don't remember) and the rawhide something repos bit me in the butt.

I do not know if it will automatically pick up the correct driver, as I have not tried this.
However if need be the way to make an xorg file is to log on the machine as root outside of X (control + alt + f1), make sure that you shut down both slim and X, then type X -configure. This will place a new xorg.conf in /root/xorg.conf.new, from here simply copy the new file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and restart slim.

If it is still not at the correct resolution, you will need to add mode lines as shown previously or change the related driver to the trident driver, followed by a restart of slim / X

Thank you for the quick reply and information. Here's what I did.
apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-video-trident returned this information

Then I ran

apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-trident

exited from the terminal, restarted machine (not just the session) and the video is now full screen. Thank you for your help on this. This topic can be marked solved.

Hmm, xserver-xorg-video-trident should have been already installed.
