I installed Synaptic not knowing it was already in the Control Centre called Manage Packages. Why did it let me install it? I just use it mainly to search out packages anyway.
( I miss the animated smileys)

Smileys are more available < but not animated > on this forum layout. At least on my advanced reply box section for me.
I never saw animated smiley's on the old forum layout.
Because all dependencies were met and the version of Synaptic ( Debian Version ) was a different version than the one shipped with your install. Then to top it off. You did say yes/Apply instead of undo. Shooting oneself in the foot? I consider that a Linux feature myself. Why did it let me install it?

Right we had them in the old Mepis Forums.
The Synaptic that is installed in the menu doesn't work anyway.
The one n the Control Centre works fine, so I guess it worked out.
