in icewm, you click on the red icon in the taskbar and then get a choice of shutting down etc.
If I choose"Suspend" it puts the computer in suspend but then to wake it back up I press the spacebar and then try the mouse etc but the sceen remains black as though it is locked, why would suspend lock the screen?

it does lock by default. try hitting the keyboard instead of using the mouse to wake up the screen.

I tried pressing keys etc nothing would show my screen again I had to press the power button and switch off the computer. I had some other little probs so went back to Crunchbang. Might give it a try again when I have more time to fiddle.
