I have successfully installed Antix M8.2 on my Compaq Presario (Intel Centrino, 4gb RAM - 2MHZ) laptop.
I used the custom install/partitioning that I asked about in another topic. The instructional for Mepis is slightly different using QParted instead of the GParted that we currently have. Based conky... I do not have swap even though I created 3 portions. I could not find a way to create a swap partition based on the Gparted. Not sure if I still need swap with a 4gb RAM.
Anyway, at first I was wondering why I have full-bar strength on WICD but cannot browse. I did some research here and found out that I had to configure WICD to use dchpclient instead of the default. And then, wireless is perfect and automatically detects my wep-protected home network everytime I re-start.
I was able to install sun-java (Jre and plug-ins) without any problems.
I am not so comfortable with Icewm yet and might install XFCE.
What would be the best way to install a complete XFCE DE? Via synaptic? Which package?
My guess is the Debian xfce4 package + xfce4-goodies?

Use the meta-installer app in antiX and install xfce-full.
(Before the meta-installer closes it asks for code, just ignore it and press Enter)

Thanks again Anti.
I entered Install Metapackages and instead chose KDE4 (instead of XFCE4 since Kubuntu does not work on my laptop due to its not having WICD by default and I wanted to try KDE4).
At the end of the updates... it did ask for a code. I just hit enter... and then it went back to the main panel without anything happening.
Is the ignoring of the"code" only for XFCE?
thanks!

Maybe you have just to log out, press F1 and choose KDE for the session.

Hi secipolla,
I have not yet installed KDE via the Metapackages installer because it asks for a"code" before the installation.
As per Anti, in the XFCE4 installation, I can just ignore it when the installer asks for code but it could be a different case when KDE is concerned.
Should I try synaptic?
KDE-Full?

ok. successfully installed XFCE4 via the meta-installer. Did not anymore try KDE4. I'm typing this now using antiX XFCE.
One thing I noticed is that if I use AC Power, my screen darkens a bit... when I unplug AC and use battery, it brightens. Is this normal?

I suppose it has something to do with power save features.
Is xfce working ok?

Yes this is normal due to the battery saving feature on your laptop.
