sound issue on imac

Hello people after a very long hiatus. I have installed M7.5 on an imac5,1 (late 06)
I must say it is working great except for one problem, sound.
I tried to set up the sound card in the control center. At the selection screen I see
hda-intel Intel Corp. 82801G (ICH7 family) High Definition Audio and
legacy.

I chose hda-intel. I said yes to the question about modifying /etc/modprobe.d/sound and
/etc/modprobe.conf (if present).

alsaconf claimed the sound driver is configured, but xmms gives this message:
Couldn't open audio, please check that: Your soundcard is configured properly.
You have the correct output plugin selected. No other program is blocking the soundcard.

I checked and the ALSA 1.2.10 output plugin [libALSA.so] was selected in xmmx's preferences.

Here are some checks done after the above mentioned steps:

Thanks for the suggestion.

After trying that I still get the same results from xmms and aplay.

Did you comment out the first line in /etc/modprobe.d/snd-hda-intel?
You then need to reconfigure alsaconf.
You might ned to reboot.

This may help:

I had tried commenting out the first line, running alsaconf, and rebooting, but that didn't help.

Wayne's blog said to comment out both lines and simply reboot. That didn't work. So with both lines commented out I ran alsaconf again and rebooted. I still get all the same error messages.

I should have mentioned I am not running antix inside virtual machine or any thing like that. It is installed on an actual partition. Also, sound works fine when I boot from osx, so I know the sound card is okay and the speakers are on. Also, even as root:

Code: Select all

# aplay -l
aplay: device_list:207: no soundcards found...
Thanks anyway for the suggestions.

Maybe pop over to Mepislovers forum and see if anyone there can help.
I'm sure it involves blaclisting some conflicting card, but which one ...

Well I went over to mepislovers and according to mos:
A note to users of the snd-hda-intel module. This driver is very poorly supported and I have only seen one person's card work with it. If you can do some research on a new card and get a better supported one, then you will save yourself a lot of hassle.

Not a good sign.

That was in 2006. Fortunately things have improved, though if we can't get your card working, you may not think so.

Post a question there. They are very helpful and antiX is part of the MEPIS family.
