Run alsaconf as root to try and reset it. I have not lost sound due to upgrades.

What card do you have?
inxi -A
You'll probably need to make some changes to /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf file or a modprobe nameofchip.
You can downgrade alsa to testing version to get lsaconf to work again
apt-get install ala-utils/testing
apt-get install apt-base/testing
run alsaconf and check the settings.
