Hello i am new to antix. I swiched to antix for ubuntu because i like to keep everything simple and want to use linux for browsing the net and the evil windows for games. great distro man very compact and simple just the way i like it. take a little long time to load on a p4 2ghz with 521 ddr ram don't know why. my questions are:

where is the pppoe.conf or something. i did find the ppp but i don't think thats it. i saw a sreeenshot of antix 7 or mepis and it has pppoe. can u tell where i can find it. in synaptic i did find pppoe but i have no net __{{emoticon}}__ (

the second question does antix read write ntsf partitions?
the third does it have a firewall ?

Welcome to antiX.

1. Type ppoeconf in a terminal (as root)

2. Yes it should (ntfs-3g is installed), but you might need to edit /etc/fstab

3. antiX uses iptables. You can install a firewall if you like, such as firestarter, guarddog or firehol (cli)

Any indications why loading is slow?

1. I solved the pppoeconf i was trying su pppoeconf or sux pppoeconf that why it didn't work. i didn't know about su then password then program

2. antix dosent see my ntfs partitions by default it only shows them after i mount them from settings > conf-system > mount and when i try to enter one of the partitions i get this error: error scanning '/media/sda1': Can't open directory: Permission denied. i don't know what to edit in the /etc/fstab could you please help me to set up the partition to mount on startup and have permission to them (i need my music). this is fstab if it helps:

# Pluggable devices are handled by uDev, they are not in fstab
/dev/sda3 / ext3 defaults,noatime 1 1
/dev/sda4 swap swap sw,pri=1 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
procbususb /proc/bus/usb usbfs devmode=0666 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts mode=0622 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs defaults 0 0
# Dynamic entries below
/dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1 vfat,ext3,ext2,reiserfs noauto,users,exec 0 0
/dev/sda2 /mnt/sda2 vfat,ext3,ext2,reiserfs noauto,users,exec 0 0
/dev/cdrom /media/cdrom udf,iso9660 noauto,users,exec,ro 0 0
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom udf,iso9660 noauto,users,exec,ro 0 0
/dev/cdrom1 /media/cdrom1 udf,iso9660 noauto,users,exec,ro 0 0
/dev/scd1 /media/cdrom1 udf,iso9660 noauto,users,exec,ro 0 0

3.about indications why loading is slow?

7-10 seconds:
waiting for /dev....:
8139cd 0000 03:00:0 this (id 10ec:8139 rev 10) is not an 8139c+ compatible chip
8139cd 0000 03:00:0 try"0139too" driver instead.
manually reviving the bootlog daemon... done

10+ seconds:
setting up network:
* not starting ipw3945, regulatory daemon driver not loaded

30+ seconds:
after i config the pppoe:
dhcpddiscover on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 on port 67 interval 6 .7 lines of this with different intervals. dosen't show this all the time.

hope i remember them correctly if not please tell me a way to paste the boot text or log something. this are the things that stall and the system takes about 1:30 min to load.

2. For your fstab

Add this line above dynamic section

/dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1 ntfs-3g auto,users,force 0 0

If sda2 is also ntfs, add this too

/dev/sda2 /mnt/sda2 ntfs-3g auto,users,force 0 0

3. You could try using these cheatcodes to see if it boots faster
lean
Xtralean

You might be able to get your internet working better through mnetwork.

i'm stuck if i add the lines
/dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1 ntfs-3g auto,users,force 0 0
/dev/sda2 /mnt/sda2 ntfs-3g auto,users,force 0 0
to fstab i see the partitions as folders but not like the cd-roms and when i enter them they are empty. on the other hand if i mount them without the lines in fstab and su > password > rox i can see the contents of the partition just fine as root and when i try to make u+rw (Give owner read+write) i get an error that ERROR: Read-only file system. don't know what to do.

Try right click>>dir>>properties and change the permissions so the users can access the files. You will have to do this as root. In a terminal sux>>password>>rox and rox should open as root.

For the mplayer problem, go to preferences/video in mplayer and change drivers to xv.

For the windows problem, try this, above dynamic

/dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1 ntfs-3g defaults 0 0
/dev/sda2 /mnt/sda2 ntfs-3g defaults 0 0

tried everything in every combination dosen't work. if it helps in rox without root i see the icons of the cdroms and the hdd (after mount) blue. i can access the ntfs partition only with sux>password>rox and then i cannot do anything if i try to copy from ntfs to home error. I only want to access the partition there must be something.

Here is the sequence I use on my dual-boot-with-XP laptop:
  • open a terminal, become root
  • enter"mountpy" and you should get a return that sda1 has been mounted
  • type"rox" or any other file manager
  • click on /media/sda1 and you should be in
Hope this helps.

To mount and unmount easily a ntfs usb hard drive, you can create one on-switch and one off-switch.

Create 2 files:

User $ (test)

/home directory -> Terminal:
[test@localhost ~]$ touch dd-on dd-off

[test@localhost ~]$ echo sudo mount -o silent,umask=0,no_def_opts,allow_other -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /media/sda1 >> dd-on

[test@localhost ~]$ echo sudo umount /dev/sda1 >>dd-off

[test@localhost ~]$ chmod +x dd-on dd-off

Change sda1 by your partition name

Edit in root the file /etc/sudoers

Under this line
root ALL=(ALL) ALL

Add this line (change Test by your username)
test ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD:/bin/mount , /bin/unmount

Now you just need to click on-off switch to mount and unmount your disk.

The best will be to add this switch to the fluxbox toolbar but i don't know if it's possible.

It work fine on my Antix.

I have never had an issue mounting an NTFS partitions. Here is one of my fstab's.

Code: Select all

# Pluggable devices are handled by uDev, they are not in fstab
/dev/sda2 / ext3 defaults,noatime 1 1
/dev/sda3 swap swap sw,pri=1 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
procbususb /proc/bus/usb usbfs devmode=0666 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts mode=0622 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs defaults 0 0
/dev/sda1 /home/eriefisher/Windows ntfs-3g defaults,noatime 0 0
# Dynamic entries below
/dev/cdrom /media/cdrom udf,iso9660 noauto,users,exec,ro 0 0
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom udf,iso9660 noauto,users,exec,ro 0 0
Mine mounts in a folder in my /home on boot.

Bingo! Had to create the new directory first, of course, kept looking for it at first...

That goes into the next FAQs!

Of course you can mount it where ever you like as long as you create the directory, but I mount my"other" partitions in /home for easy access. When I open a file manager I'm in /home. Everything else is just a click away.
