This just recently started after a failed attempt to install Nvidia drivers. Everytime I try to open either xmms or mplayer nothing happens. I try to open them via the terminal and I see the segmentation fault error. I'm not sure what happened when I tried to install the nvidia drivers but it was a disaster. First I tried to install manually using the driver from Nvidia and when I restarted x it worked, however after reboot all I could get was a wildly colored screen.

I then tried to install it from mepis-xconfig. Everything seemed ok but upon restarting x I found that the Xserver-xorg had been removed. I reinstalled this which removed the nvidia driver and set it to use vesa since nv would not work either.

I don't care about the Nvidia card right now but I would like to get the sound and video apps working again. Any suggestions?

Have you tried to reinstall xmms and mplayer?

About nvidia, as you are using sid repos, I'm not sure if the nvidia used in Mepis repos work or not. If you try from Xconfig, make sure the Mepis repos are enabled.
If it doesn't work, I suggest using the h2 script from sidux, but be careful!
This is what I do with antiX-sid and the smxi script.

Read about it here:

========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========

linktext was:"http://techpatterns.com/forums/about736.html"
====================================

1. wget -NqO /usr/local/bin/smxi
========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"http://techpatterns.com/smxi"

====================================

2. chmod +x /usr/local/bin/smxi

Logout of X. I do this by Ctrl Alt Bksp
At tty, login as root, type smxi and it will put you into init3
When it first runs, it will say that it is unsupported, but press y
This will now add the sidux repo to your apt/sources.list (Don't worry)
Continue with the script, but do not install new kernel or apt-get upgrade, choose the continue option until you get to the nvidia part.
Follow and choose the correct one for your card, and this part of the script should correctly install nvidia from the nvidia site.

Before you do this, keep a backup of a working xorg.conf file.

I have tried to reinstall both. I will try a purge and see if that helps.

I will have a look at the sidux scripts, thanks for the info.

I figured it out. I reinstalled the video driver directly from Nvidia and it fixed all the problems. After a lot of head scratching I realized it was just video related applications that were affected. The first install of this driver must have failed in some way and not reported it.

I do not recemend using the mepis-xconfig unless your system is completely stock and have not use other repos. Even then it's blindly installing with no way to see if there is a problem and no option to back out. I would prefer just to use synaptic and grab the packages yourself and see if everything is ok.

Glad to hear that is is ok.

antiX-M7.01 comes with the Mepis repos disabled, which is fine if you want to install the newest nvidia from the nvidia site (or just install from the nvidia site).
But the easiest way though is to use mxconfig, but that means enabling the Mepis repos, and use this if you need the 96XX or 100.14.19 drivers.
If you need the 71XX legacy drivers, you need the Mepis repos enabled and you have to install via synaptic, not mxconfig.
