Using MX 14.4 -- superb distro. Thanks for it!
Problem: when I play a video using VLC, I have sound just fine. But videos played on YouTube, in Chromium, have no sound. Darndest thing I've ever seen.
Has anyone else encountered this problem? Any ideas? Thanks.

a couple of questions for you:
1. does youtube have sound if played thru iceweasel?
2. have you installed pulseaudio?
3. if you have installed pulseaudio, have you installed the pulseaudio vlc plugin?
Thanks.

My goodness -- yes, sound in Iceweasel. Installed PulseAudio, set the volume at max, and still no sound in Chromium.
I hope I don't have to switch to Iceweasel. I use my Chromebook a lot and would hate to lose the synchronization support I get there between Chromebook and Chromium.
Thanks.
Is there something in Pulseaudio I should be checking? I'm new to this app. Thanks again.

you can look in the Pulseaudio Volume Control app on the applications tab to see if chromium shows up when trying to play audio. Its possible that for some reason chromium is muted.
Out of curiosity, is there an .asoundrc file in your home folder or in /etc (it will be hidden). If so, please post the contents here.

1. Here is the content of .asoundrc
defaults.pcm.!card PCH
defaults.ctl.!card PCH
2. I've looked under Pulseaudio Volume Control and can't find any reference under any tab to applications affected. Can you direct me further? Sorry to be so dense!
Many thanks.

Well, friends, found my solution. The version of Chromium in the AntiX repositories -- Debian Stable, always behind the curve, IMO -- was too old to support Pulseaudio. I just downloaded a fresh install of Chrome, rather than Chromium, and sound works fine!
Thanks to everyone for their help. Problem solved!
