After much testing and trying various solutions with BitJam we were able to get around this by adding from=all to the boot parameters.

The from=all boot parameter may help others who are unable to boot a LiveUSB. It will not help with a LiveCD. This boot parameter will cause all partitions to be scanned even partitions on non-removable devices. The problem was triggered because annoying beggar's usb device was reported by the system as non-removable.

We are modifying our software so that by default all usb devices, in addition to all removable devices, are scanned to find the squashfs file. This should eliminate the need for the from=all workaround. In the meantime, if your antiX-13 LiveUSB errors out with the message:

Code: Select all

Fatal Error:
No usb,cd devices found!
then the from=all boot parameter might get around the problem. If it doesn't solve your problem then another possible cause is a missing driver which I can try to help you solve following the steps annoying beggar used above.

Hmmm, unfortunately in my case that did not help either.
It did make a difference, in the sense searched other devices too,
but it could not locate the linuxfs file.
I usually use unetbootin, which usually works, but not always.
Sometimes, dd neither.
I blame myself & move on, but maybe there's a root cause to this.
Not that I can find it by myself, because my knowledge of computers
is rather scanty, but if someone is kind enough to point me to the
right URL/pdf, I do have the patience to dig till it's fixed. And I have
more than one HDD, so extreme experiments are safely possible.
So what next ?
Do I post more details here or do I send it to a specialist or what ?
Thanks !

OK, here are some observations that hopefully help narrow down the problem....
( Sorry I haven't figured out the formatting procedures , next post will be OK )

When USB is made with Unetbootin, the"folder-tree" is different from what results by using dd

Unetbootin USB drive is easily read by filemanager as well as gparted.
Unfortunately, the Unetbootin USB does not boot even upto menu screen.
It stops at a boot prompt, complaining of unrecognisable characters.

dd USB is readable from filemanager but gparted declares it as unallocated....
" Invalid partition table - recursive partition on /dev/sdb"
The dd USB goes to menu screen, but cannot find antiX/linuxfs file later.
Adding from=all in boot paramenters does not help ( still fails after retrying )

dd USB Successfully boots : AMD-7750 Dual Core (2700MHz) on Gigabyte motherboard

Error trying to boot : AMD-Athlon XP2400 (1991MHz) on ASUS motherboard : A7V266-MX

dd makes a iso file, so I don't think it would show up as a regular filesystem.
I have noticed that when dd says it is done, it is really not. I have a stick with a led in it, and it keeps flashing a while after dd says it is done... If I unplug when dd says I can, I end up with a non-bootable stick

I am used to giving USB devices a lot of time ( not seen a USB-3 in action yet )
but I was shaken to see snide remarks from gparted !
However, it works fine on another computer. Mine seems a bit of an outlier.
( It would ! )
Now, either I could pester people here to help me fix the problem at root
( If it is easy to sort out, If there are enough cranky computers like mine )
or
I could perhaps plug my HDD ( 40GB IDE ) into another machine and
install full version of Luddite and then customise/tweak when returned to my PC.

If anyone knows it won't work, please stop me ! __{{emoticon}}__

Regards,
JD

It will work. I have done this before. When done and drive is in new computer. Post as root in terminal

Code: Select all

blkid

Code: Select all

cat /etc/fstab

Code: Select all

cat /boot/grub/menu.lst
in case the drive install gets confused after switching computers.

I sent you an email with instructions on how to boot antiX without having to remove the hard drive. You just need to use a distro that boots to copy the /antiX/linuxfs file from our LiveUSB to a partition on your hard drive. IMO, this is, by far, the easiest approach.

BTW: You and rokytnji might have some common interests.

Oops. You already solved the problem. Never mind.
