topic title: Solved: Can't get 1280x1024

I've got an old nVidia Quadro 4 380XGL in a Compaq w8000 with a Samsung SyncMaster 740N monitor. I want to use 1280x1024 for my resolution which I can do from the boot cd by picking it at boot but I can't get to work once I've installed to the HD...

If I load the drivers (either legacy or not) through the control center I lose everything and have to reinstall...

Oh theres a stack of other foolishness going on, this is just the first. I am pleased with the basic interface though and its of course very snappy on my hardware.

Post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf. It may just need some editing.

I tried that but without really knowing what I'm doing...
I like how the control center will give me the files to edit.

Your desired resolution is listed so it should work. I would try to add the resolution to all the mode lines just to make sure your covered.

You got it! I went back through and made sure it was in for all modes, then rebooted and tah dah!

As eriefisher said, you could try adding 1280x1024 for all the modes.

Your driver is the legacy one (96.43.xx). I advice strongly that you use the sgfxi script (or smxi, which updates the system and the graphics driver - this last through sgfxi). It keeps the driver always up-to-date and accompanies any xserver-xorg updates that otherwise would break the drivers from the Mepis repos.
