Hello:
I was fooling around with dwm changing the status bar and logging out and logging back in several times. One of those times, slim stopped working right. The log in window comes up but I can't log in.

I can still login from cli, so that's better than the last time I broke slim when even my user name was gone.

I suppose I could install gdm from cli, but I would prefer to continue using slim. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Sorry I can't help with slim, I don't even know what it is. However, for fooling around you can't beat being able to restore quickly. For example, having a boot from iso option in grub, you can have a fresh install in minutes. If you don't like loosing all the changes you've made, install to small 3 or 4GB partition and backup each night.

You may need to

apt-get remove --purge slim
apt-get install slim

but before doing so, save /etc/slim.conf and /usr/share/slim folder so once slim is re-installed you can just replace the new files/folders with the old ones

I remember that thread well __{{emoticon}}__ but that was a different box. I did check slim.conf (looks fine) and did what erie had suggested about slim/var/log & lock, still slim won't let me log in.

I'll try your suggestion and hope that works.

I managed to solve this problem. It was not slim, it was a problem with a line in .xinitrc having to do with status bar in dwm. I don't understand why one line in the dwm section would affect all of the others wm, but after I deleted that, slim let me log in (into fluxbox) without any problem.

Thanks Zenmystic for your comments about backingup, they make sense and I'll look into it.
