I believe that BleachBit is not included by default in AntiX-16.

Can it be installed via Synaptic?

Has the Firefox 'bug' been fixed?

Are there any other known BleachBit 'bugs' which will affect AntiX-16?

What, if anything, will happen to AntiX-16 if I use the BleachBit program?

Is there another way to 'clean' the AntiX installation of extraneous downloaded update files without using BleachBit?

Thank you very much to anyone who can answer these questions for me. I have been unable to find the answers anywhere.

Not preinstalled in antiX16; that's correct.
Idunno which particular"firefox bug" you're interested in, but even if you check here

bear in mind that if you install the package from debian jessie repository, you get a fairly old (1.4-1) version
https://packages.debian.org/jessie/bleachbit

I haven't seen any bugs reported here (antix forum).
If you use the bleachbit program... the outcome depends on which bleachbit plugins you've activated (checkmarked).
I bet no one here has tested every available plugin (can't, unless they installed every program associated with each of the bleachbit plugins).

In case you want to inspect what's"still laying around"... files downloaded from the network are placed in the directory /var/cache/apt/archives
You can perform a cleanup of these cached files by issuing the command sudo apt-get clean

Skidoo, thank you very much for your prompt and informative reply. It pretty much answers my questions.

But now I have another one.

I went to BleachBit's site (of which I was formerly unaware) and saw that I can directly download the latest version.

Is that safe to do in AntiX-16? If you do not know, is there anyone else here who does? Thanks.

In the past (not v1.12) I've downloaded and used the *.deb file from bleachbit.org and it worked fine.
edit: okay, just now i grabbed v1.12 from bleachbit.org and used gdebi to install it in antiX16. It seems to run fine.

If the"gdebi" utility isn't already installed on your system,
sudo apt update && apt install gdebi

After downloading the *.deb file

url was:"https://www.bleachbit.org/download/file/t?file=bleachbit_1.12_all_debian8.deb"
linktext was:"https://www.bleachbit.org/download/file ... ebian8.deb"
====================================

browse to ~/Downloads in file manager (rox-filer or spacefm), right-click the .deb file and"open" (or openWith) gdebi
The gdebi utility will verify whether"all dependencies are met" and will invite you to install or view/inspect the package contents.

FWIW, whenever you have reservations about a program (How will it behave on my system? Do I really want to install/keep it?)
you can boot to a non-persistent liveUSB session in order to"install and test drive" the program

Specific to firefox cache, if your system isn't strapped for RAM, consider redirecting firefox's"disk cache" to use tmpfs instead.

howto:
type about:config into browser addressbar, click past the"I will be careful" screen, if necessary, and
right-click the page, choose"New}String" from the context menu.
preference name:
browser.cache.disk.parent_directory
string value:
/tmp/happyday ( or /tmp/youchoosename or just /tmp )
Exit/Restart the browser for the change to take effect.

After making this change, you can (same as ever) perform a"History}RecentHistory}ClearAll" operation on-demand at any time during a browser session.
Benefits: reduced drive access*, increase in pageload speed (perhaps imperceptible), definitive total cache erasure at powerdown.

If you decide to do this, bear in mind that bleachbit doesn't know to check/clean the cached files in the now-modified path.

If you ever wish to _undo_ the configured redirection:
visit about:config, right-click and"Reset" browser.cache.disk.parent_directory, then restart the browser.

* during liveboot sessions, (excluding"static persistence" mode) no harm, but no benefit ~~ all writes already occur in tmpfs, by design

Thank you very much. Your answers were perfect. I did what you said - and BleachBit 1.12 works just fine. Thank you again!
