how do you make slim present the password for the default user directly?

Hello. I think you need to edit the file slim.theme:
control center > system > edit config files
I'm not sure how to edit it; perhaps check the manpage.

Not sure:
Try /etc/slm.conf
and add or remove # from this line:
# Focus the password field on start when default_user is set
# Set to"yes" to enable this feature
focus_password yes
