-I need to tap into your infinite wisdom please. I printed the grub man, read it good, tried a bunch of things. After the new 3.7.10 install, it does not appear on the startup gui for me to select and boot.
It plainly shows up in the menu.lst
update grub works ok
don’t know what else is there to do -
synaptic identifies grub version as: 1.99-27+deb7u2
Thank You in advance

I'd uncomment lockalternative=false and update-grub again if it was me with this problem.
Code: Select all
## should update-grub lock alternative automagic boot options
## e.g. lockalternative=true
## lockalternative=false
# lockalternative=false

Do you mean the 3.7.10.antix7 version?
It looks like you haven't installed it.
apt-get update && apt-get install linux-image-3.7.10-antix.7-486-smp linux-headers-3.7.10-antix.7-486-smp
Added: What version of antiX are you usning?

nope - there is no 3.7.10 for me to select... just my antix 3.6.11
The script says not to uncomment anything
DO NOT UNCOMMENT THEM, Just edit them to your needs
I have this in my /boot:
/boot/extlinux
/boot/grub
/boot/config-3.6.11-antix.1-486-smp
/boot/config-3.7.10-antix.5-486-smp

I thought I was running Antix 13 b3
can't find it listed in synaptic.... I'm kinda stupid I guess

Did you 'install' 3.7.10 or just copy it? (Might be the problem).

I did the apt-get install from command line.
followed the instructions on the antix wiki

Latest kernel is 3.7.10-antix.7
Post the contents of /boot/grub/menu.lst (again)
cat /boot/grub/menu.lst
Did you do what roky suggested?
Post the menu.lst after you make the change
Also : are you sure you are using the antiX grub loader and not MEPIS?

Oh Crap,
I now remember after I did the beta 3 install, none of the other OS showed up in the boot loader to select. So I quickly made a small partition and installed mepis onto that. That quik fix was a solution for me back then., showing everything on my box.
Ok,
just uncommented lockalternative=false and update-grub again,
after the update it reinserted the comment, as shown below,
tried the reboot, no dice.

did you boot into the little mepis install, and update grub from that? or?
I guess that if you use the"mepis-grub" and update your"antix-grub", it wouldn't work too well?

Just had the same thought.
I rebooted into my default SDA7 small mepis install.
Did update-grub
unfortunately, in viewing the command line it did not see the new 3.7.10 kernel found
Unpon reboot, as expected, no new kernel listed to select.
Just many more duplicate entries that are polluting the screen.

Which version of Mepis are you using?
Anyhow, you need to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst on Mepis since that is the one being used to boot from

This grub 2 is lousy.
i really wonder about going back to lilo
Anyway,
I accidentally hosed my partition, but I do have back ups.
Downloaded the latest antix ... distrowatch said it had 3.7.10 kernel
Well , it had the same 3.6.11.
Anyway, once installed, it did not see my most needed mepis partition w/ grub legacy
So for right now, I got rid of the antix
installed an old mepis
That saw everything
old junk, but works
got to head out for awhile
Thank you all for the help
bb.
