I recently installed antiX 7.2 on the above machine, purchasing it for around one hundred dollars in used condition. I thought I would detail my experiences here to aid anyone considering something similar for antiX. Shuttles are SFF (Small Form Factor) computers and the SB61G2 is about the size of a small toaster.

Although I have antiX installed on three other computers, the most used was a P3 1 GHz with 192MB of RAM. Performance was great but the browsers were slow and I grew tired of the delay. I decided to upgrade processor and memory to check out the difference and thus purchased the Shuttle.

The machine is a Pentium 4 (Northwood core) 2.6 GHz with hyper threading. Also a 160GB Maxtor hard drive, Sony DVD-RW (DRU-5), 1 GB DDR Ram, and integrated audio and video. The audio is AC97...Realtek ALC650F. The integrated video is Intel Extreme Graphics 2. The Shuttle had one open AGP slot and one open PCI slot.

I scrounged through my old parts pile and found an old SoundBlaster audio card and a GeForce FX 5200 128MB video card. I kept them waiting in the wings for any audio or video problems.

antiX installed fine but even forcing 1024x768 at Grub gave me 800x600. I could force it to 1024 after antiX was up but on reboot it would revert to 800x600 again. Wanting a little more oomph on the video anyway, I finally installed the GeForce card and the video problem was solved.

The sound was sporadic as well. Sound worked on initial installation but only the left channel (speaker) worked. Next boot both speakers worked fine. Next boot no audio at all. Used alsa config and mixer with mixed results. Finally defaulted to the SoundBlaster card for solid audio.

Now that I'm up and running performance has been great. From the press of the start button to the slim log-on screen is 50 seconds. So even taking the time to type in username and password I'm booted up and running in under a minute. Iceweasel takes 6 seconds to start. Both Iceweasel and Opera are nearly instantaneous to react. I rarely use even 50% of the processor and most of the time memory use is 15% or below. I haven't tried leaving iceweasel up and running. With my old P3 computer memory use would slowly increase in that scenario until I was close to maxxing memory.

I love antiX but the smile on my face is even larger with the performance I'm enjoying now. antiX is a life saver for older P3 era machines but if you want some fun put it on something faster!

I've also been running antiX on several machines, one of which (for at least the last 6-8 months) is a P4 Northwood, 2.6ghz with a 160gb HD & 1gb ram. It's definitely snappy without a doubt, and apart from some very strange problems with"Xorg" becoming"Unexecutable" all of a sudden (For no apparent reason that i know of) and prompting a"re-install", it's been great.

I have noticed the memory thing though, and when left on for any length of time (We're talking days here, if not weeks) especially using IceWeasel, the memory does creep up and doesn't seem to drop. Eventually i do have to reboot to clear it and kind of"Refresh". I've had to do this with almost ALL of the Linx distros that i've run though, whatever machine i run them on, so it's no biggie. __{{emoticon}}__

Definitely worth a try for those thinking of putting antiX on a faster (more modern) machine. Strangely enough i use Shuttles for my music work here, but i've never put antiX on them. Glad to hear that it's working solid, but then antiX does"Rock"! __{{emoticon}}__

Thanks for the comments. Hopefully I won't experience the Xorg problem you've experienced but if I do I will let you know and we can compare notes.

The memory leak is annoying but I don't leave computers on for any length of time anymore. Trying to be a little"greener" __{{emoticon}}__ From what you are saying...sounds like a kernel glitch.

Shuttle's seem like perfect companions to antiX. Small size, efficient energy use, and well designed.

Thanks for the reply impuwat. __{{emoticon}}__ I can't believe that it's happened again, just a few days after i've re-installed antiX!!! __{{emoticon}}__

I just can't get X to start. I suppose i could just re-install Xorg but as i'm not 100% sure of a:) what caused the problem in the first place & b:) what i'm doing re: Xorg, it seems a bit foolhardy. At the moment i'm having to use Zenwalk (Which i've also got installed on this machine) to be able to use the machine.

If anyone on here has any suggestions i'd be glad to hear them. __{{emoticon}}__ This is the 3rd time that it's happened, in about the same amount of weeks.

DjiNN,

That's bad news and no-one else has reported it (yet).

Are there any messages in /var/log that give any clue as to why this is happening?

Does upgrading generally from the default or from sid/unstable 'solve' the problem?

Hi anti, thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately there are some problems (Well, many actually) that are just beyond me, and i feel that this is one of them. It'll probably be better to just re-install again, but as i mentioned earlier, i feel that i really need to find out"Why" it's happening so that it doesn't get repeated.

I'm not running sid/unstable on this machine, just testing, although i have used"Debian Experimental" to grab xcompmgr, and i could have left that enable in the sources.list... perhaps that could be a part of the problem?

I've had a look at the xorg.0.log (is that the right name?) in /var/log and have put a part of it below, just in case you can see something. I've cut it short because it's quite long, and most of it is taken up with the same line about"Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (Connection refused)".

Can you see any obvious things?

Thanks anti, appreciate the help and advice.

I'm at work at the moment (skiving!)
It could be down to the video card you have. Do you have nvidia/ati?

LOL!! I won't tell anyone, honest! __{{emoticon}}__

Re: the Vid card, AFAIK it's onboard, and i think it's of the"intel" variety. It's certainly not nvidia and i don't think it's ati. I've removed xorg and tried re-installing but there are dep probs. (ie:"X depends on Y, which is not going to be installed, so xorg cannot be installed")

Phew, and it's really hot here to boot...... I'm more of a moon person than a sun person. Where's the rain when you need it? Or some snow even.... __{{emoticon}}__

It's English slang for"Not doing what you're supposed to be doing" LOL!! ie: being at work and doing something"Other than" the work you should be doing. __{{emoticon}}__

anti - i've bitten the bullet &"re-installed" antiX. (Sigh). In doing so, i actually think this shows one of the great strengths of not just antiX, but Linux in general. It took all of 5 mins to get it re-installed, and apart from the fact that i have to also re-install a few apps (IceDove etc) it's pretty much done. Used the same /home dir, so all the settings are already there.

Try doing that with Windows!! __{{emoticon}}__

I'm still not sure just what's causing it, but i'm going to keep a careful note of everything that i do and all the updates/upgrades in the next few days/weeks.

I will bet it's the same issue I had with slim. The log file gets huge and won't let you start x. I had to remove /var/log/slim.log and /var/run/slim.lock to get x started. I then found it was full of acpi errors so I disabled it and no more problem.

There is another post here somewhere about it I will try to find it.

Thanks eriefisher, i never thought of that. If it happens again i'll check the log files. It's happened 3 times now!! __{{emoticon}}__

If i remember i'll keep an eye on the log files over the next few weeks to see what they're up to!!

The msystem has an option to clear logs on apply and on reboot. Would that help clear these types of logs?
