I've installed AntiX 13.2 on my junkbox, and was trying to setup my screen resolution where I could read things. By going to Control Center == Session ==Set Screen Resolution, you end up with a change in the resolution, but when you reboot all changes are gone!

After searching the forum for"resolution", I found out that if you wanted a permanent change, you needed to edit the icewm startup file. If you need to make a persistent change, you may need to add"xandr -s 800x600" to your startup files. Or whatever resolution you want.

Everything changes on the screen. Now I can read the YouTube comments without having to try to modify iceweasel. And LibreWrite is almost at the true size.

However, my conky has now drifted offscreen on the right. Can anyone help with this headache?

Are you using a LCD monitor? And, when you move your mouse to the right of the screen, does the display scroll to where you can see conky?

Using Phillips 107S crt monitor. Mouse just goes to the end of the screen.

Like I said elsewhere, it's computer parts people junked and I am using. Motherboard, cpu, and fan worked on this one. PSU from another computer that had a dead motherboard. DVD drive from another one. And hard drive from another machine that caught fire (?). All in a case that was dropped from a three story building (His girl friend was mad that day.). Together it works.

If you have the original graphics card in your computer you may need to update, or install Nvidia video drivers.
This step will solve a lot of issues.

Wow...what a story, but I think the machine I'm on right now is even worse. It's a PIII-500MHz slot-1 CPU, with 576MB RAM, no optical drive at all (only a floppy), connected to an ancient hp Pavilion mx50 crt monitor in my workshop.

Anyway, it looks like you might be trying to use a resolution that is not optimal for the monitor. BTW, what resolution are you using? Looks like the specs for your monitor indicate 1280 x 1024 at 60.0 Hz as possible the highest it can handle. If the resolution is OK, then maybe adjust the refresh rate to get everything on the screen.

Neil-- The install was setting the resolution at1280 x 1024 at 85 Hz and the only way I can see to change it is the resolution but not the frequency. I tried this monitor on a Windows box, and 85 Hz is the ONLY frequency. Told you is was a junkbox. __{{emoticon}}__

And I am using the motherboard graphics. No card.

All I have done is to change the resolution at startup as previously stated.

Back to the original question. When I changed resolution down to 800 X 600 (so I could read), the conky box showing AntiX version, date, time, etc. in AntiX 13.2 either drifted off screen OR disappeared completely. Can someone direct me on how to get it back?

PLEASE?

I could of course be wrong, but the spec sheet for your monitor shows the follow modes:

Code: Select all

Factory Preset Resolution Modes:
640 x 480 / 75.0 Hz,
1280 x 1024 / 85.0 Hz,
800 x 600 / 70.0 Hz,
800 x 600 / 85.0 Hz,
640 x 400 / 60.0 Hz,
1024 x 768 / 60.0 Hz,
1024 x 768 / 75.0 Hz,
640 x 480 / 85.0 Hz
I would think that if you have the correct timing and resolution, the whole desktop should show on the screen. Unless, of course, anti... guessed it right, and conky is turned off.

Yea! Genius at work. The simplest things. And here I have been reading files like crazy to try to figure it out.

Neil -- Don't forget this is a JUNKBOX setup. The monitor only works at 85 Hz no matter how you try to set it.

Glad you got it sorted! And, I haven't forgotten"JUNKBOX" (a lovely name), but if 85Hz works there is no reason to set a lower refresh rate anyway. So...it's looking good now @ 800x600-85Hz?

Great you have found the cause!
Might I suggest trying to change the startup around so that the conky line is below the xset line if you have not already done so?
That *should* start conky after xset has changed the resolution. If it does not, I would add a sleep time to the xset line to delay it's startup.
Example:
sleep 3 && conky &

I know this is solved but you aint the only one with a junk system.

I control my Dell 22" crt which defaults to microscope resolution by using

Code: Select all

xrandr -s 1024x768
which on that 22" fits just fine for us blind boys. I enter that code into Icewm, jwm,and fluxbox startup on that
