How can I set vlc as default video-player?

"Control Center => Preferred Applications => Set Default Applications" didn't help.

If you're using spacefm , right click on a video you want to play , select open then choose , then select the default player , then click the box for default player for the file type.
I did it this way before I knew there was a spot in the control center ........
I've found spacefm to be my favorite way to do just about anything with file types.
