I have been using iceape (semonkey) for a while now in antiX and I like it a lot. It seems to be quite a bit lighter in RAM usage than iceweasel, especially if several tabs are opened.
Video from youtube and apple trailers work and there are lots of addons for users to try (I don't really like them).
It also comes with chatzilla, an email client, address book and composer for html.

I need users to let me know what they think of iceape V iceweasel.
If iceape is preferred (the next test will have it as default), should we get rid of claws-mail and/or xchat?

One advantage iceweasel has over iceape is that it can be localized very easily by simply downloading the appropriate language pack in the repos. From what I can tell for iceape only English is available in the repo and if you want any other language you have to download that version from the mozilla seamonkey site.

i personally like iceweasel, because of the customization i did to it and the add-ons that i use. i don't use an email client, address book, composer(i like geany btw) or irc. also i like my programs to do only one thing and that thing well. i had trouble with iceweasel ram eat up but not a big deal. now that i had learned more about linux, i can customize my install the way i want it. so, i guess if iceweasel is out, i only need to know what apps i need to install to make video and flash work. did i mention that i like the path that iceweasel is going in version 3.7 and 4 ? __{{emoticon}}__ peace.

I can tell about my modest experience.
Seamonkey (2.0) browser appears to be able to do whatever Iceweasel does, even more now that it's compatible with most of Firefox's addons. But Iceweasel, as a Firefox close brother, is more refined usability wise (much much larger user base).
SM doesn't have the 'Private Browsing' mode. I don't use it anyway (BTW: I set Iceweasel to block all cookies, in case somebody doesn't know the goods overcome by far the bads. Pressing ctrl+I opens the sites preferences and is an easy way to enable a site to load cookies for the session or for as long as you want. Also I let the password manager remember my logins so it's easy to login even if Iceweasel clears all cookies when closed)...back to the topic, one can of course delete cookies and history easy in SM even without PB set up.

I've used very little chat but chatZilla did work really fine when I used (it's a well established app, it seems).

Also not using much too I was ever much comfortable with SM's mail client with it fetching mails whenever the browser opens. And it seems to not use much more resources (I didn't check that with Claws mail - which BTW I didn't set in this current installation yet).

So I would choose Iceweasel for a standalone browser. But I wouldn't be surprised if in the end Seamonkey would be chosen over Iceweasel+Claws+Xchat.

I'm downloading the Iceape package to check if it has the translations (it's huge, >50MB).

If it's not asking too much you could talk more about the future of Iceweasel, ICE.

Edit- well it turned into a 350MB folder to be compiled (you did that, anti?), it comes with everything to work in Windows , Mac and maybe more. But I found this 'shipped-locales' file:

i can't find the article that i read about all the changes in future versions of firefox but here are some that i remember:
- no title bar. i find it useless. i will like to see tabs like when you join 2 windows in fluxbox. but now i prefer tabs under address bar.
- no menu bar. again useless. many of the options are used once a month an the rest are in the navigation bar and in the right click menu.
- a separate button for history or bookmarks. so we could add the one that we use.
- status bar included in the address bar.
- address bar and search are merged.
- that buttons that are not needed wont be showed.
- process manager to kill the tab that uses resources or a tab that is frozen.

i short firefox will become google chrome. if i find the article i'll post it.
here are some pictures of the design mock-ups of the firefox 3.7 and 4:

Nice.

BTW, I tried to install Miro today but the unstable version has broken dependencies. Do you know it?
Maybe I'll try the stable.

I use iceape/seamonkey, links2 more than firefox/iceweasel.
RAM usage is main reason i use it - feels alittle faster loading pages?
the only add-on i use with it is the monkey menu.

There is also a way to install just the iceape-browser and composer and not mail, chatzilla.
Another choice to chew over __{{emoticon}}__

I personally really like seamonkey. It's a terrific app. It has everything I need under one roof, is fast and responsive, has just the right amount features, I think it fits in perfectly with the antix philosophy. And if we can install just the browser, then it will play into the antix philosophy of choice. Thanks.

if i can remove separate programs from it, that i don't need, it's a good thing. maybe the next test iso should have it instead of iceweasel so that people can test it, including me.

That is the plan ice-m. The base version will have just the iceape-browser and the full version iceape (minus the gnome bloat)

I am all for grabbing a Seamonkey 2.0 system, creating a .deb for it and using it as, at the very least, an option or alternative for Web browser and Email client. Frankly, that's what I use, regardless of what we include, and I even frequently use the Nightly Builds, which I personally install in their own separate directory beneath my home directory.

Seamonkey does not have as many plugins as Firefox, but it has plenty of them and it is quite a bit more stable than the version of Iceweasel that came with M8.2, which frequently crashed, and was the only issue I ever had with M8.2. I rarely used it after the first day or two; I just grabbed Seamonkey and used it instead.

Hi Anti:
How does one do this? This is very attractive to me since I don't use the mail package presently bundled in with Antix. I haven't tried iceape-browser though, since I'm a happy Opera user, but I might give it a whirl, especially if I can install just the browser.
thanks

Hi Pedro,

If you do an apt-cache search iceape, you will see that there are a number of distinct iceape packages. The one called iceape is the metapackage that tries to install the full suite. The one called iceape-browser installs only the browser component, rather than the entire suite.
