I tried to use Control Center > Session > Set Resolution to get the native 1024x600, but it does not stick. What is the correct way to do that? Create an xorg.conf?

Before creating an xorg.conf, boot with the nouveau cheats removed.
The best way to create the xorg.conf file is to boot live with the noxorg option removed (or boot the no cheats option) and copy it over to the hard disk if it is correct.

OK, thanks, it looks like that worked.
