Check Cmos settings in bios first for time if your computer thinks it is the year 2000.
Sounds like your cmos battery is going dead to me.

Unfortunately I' using an old Toshiba tecra 9000 which doesn't let you view the bios clock.
Isn't there a way to set the time using an online server, forget what their called?
I remember being asked during installation if I wanted to set the clock via GDM or something similar.
Silly me I choose the other option __{{emoticon}}__

Ok doing that gives me this:
Current default time zone: 'America/Los_Angeles'
Local time is now: Wed Mar 1 19:02:31 PST 2000.
Universal Time is now: Thu Mar 2 03:02:31 UTC 2000.
running 'ntpdate' returns:
1 Mar 19:14:16 ntpdate[3179]: no servers can be used, exiting

Try re-installing ntpdate.
I have an old Dell that only shows the correct date when net is running.

AHA!
I can't do that it won't let me.
I have a package"icedove" that is screwing up everything.
It is marked for upgrade and won't let me unmark it or change to re-install or anything.
Whenever i run apt-get or synaptic get the error:
E: /var/cache/apt/archives/icedove_8.0-2_i386.deb: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 127
I've tried 'purge' and uninstall and others and icedove just won't go away.
So when i tried to upgarde/re-install ntpdate and gave this error and didn't upgarde anything.
When I try to uninstall icedove I get this error:
E: icedove: Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should reinstall it before attempting a removal.
But It won't let me re-install it, that option is grayed out.

might help with that. and if it does, it might solve the other issue.
Be careful though with the suggestions.

Ok i got rid of my"icedove" problem.
But I still cannot get the correct date.
ntpdate still won't connect to any servers.
1 Mar 19:59:02 ntpdate[2333]: no servers can be used, exiting.
EDIT:
DOH!
I forgot to add a server.
ntpdate 0.us.pool.ntp.org
All is well __{{emoticon}}__
Thanks for the help!
