Well, I got some questions in the chatroom.
I am not sure what to say, I hope I have not cut&pasted it too much.

Code: Select all

<guy> whats up with antix 13 beta2..the nic stuff seems to have changed as far as kernel recognition of hardware
<guy> alsa does seem to work however.
<guy> and no nic support
<guy> and why cling to the outdated wicd..instead of network manager
<guy> rust_collector..but anyway the issue is moot since the beta2 kernel does not recognize the nic hardware any longer
<rust_collector> Uhm, I just type ceni in a root terminal, and so far, any possible connection has popped up in the window. eth0 first, then, If I have the phone connected, usb0, and wlan0
<guy> rust_collector..well not going to happen here without kernel support of nic hardware any longer

<guy> rust_collector..well the earlier beta supported the nic hardware but this beta2 does not
<guy> rust_collector..yea if antix includes the kernel source and gcc..i guess could just rebuild it for nic support
<guy> rust_collector but also it doesn't seem to support 640x480 and for many people that is the only monitor size they have.

I hope you get what he is asking about.
Why is there no nic support in beta2?
why not use network manager?
why no smaller screen resolution?

I don*t quite get it, but I can ask for the guy, who I call guy.

rc did"guy" post anything about his hardware?
Maybe there is a driver conflict, or a driver removed due to a driver conflict. so perhaps one driver needs to be removed or one added, but i cannot say anything without hardware info
also without hardware info no one can say why the resolution does not go lower. I know i can set my laptop resolution to 320 x 400 when using an external crt. maybe the problem is not thee resolution does not go low, but rather it defaults to high. making an xorg.conf may be needed.

i guess the short of it is there is info needed on the hardware, maybe that can be retrieved from the beta one or booting into init 3?

Hi Dave, not, he didn't really give much info about his machine, except that he had several network cars, and I think very very little ram. I am not sure about his exact spec there, but he did mention"most" people having just 32, and some dos users having just 4. I really don't know, I wonder if he is talking about bits, and not ram?
I think it just sounds a little strange

But nic...means network card, right? I cannot see that antix don't have support for that?

yes it means network interface card. Yes it is possible to not support a nic, as with the tp link on the forum, but it is common, with broadcom coming to mind that drivers are conflicting.

Oh, yea, sure, but it is not like antix has dropped support for all nics some time between beta1 and beta2.
(or I wouldn't be here now)

I don't get it! If he doesn't like wicd and prefers network manager, why doesn't he just uninstall the one and install the other? Heck, we have all of Debian's repositories to chose from.
