For a movie dvd, you do not mount it.
Go to gnome-mplayer and open it there.
Or type in a terminal as user not root once the dvd is inserted
mplayer /dev/sr0
You might also need to install libdvdcss2 from the deb-mutimedia repo. Enable it, then install libdvdcss2 and then disable multimedia repo.

I think I'm just going to change the drive.
I have a HP DVD writer 300i, That I will install later this week.
I'm giving up on the Samsung drive. hopefully this will solve the problem.

umm can you start mplayer from the menu?
("start button", applications, sound&video, gnome-mplayer)
Or any other media player?, if you have more of them?
I don't have a dvd drive on my machine, so it is kinda hard to try to figure out...

Mplayer is not the problem. I have used it to watch movies stored on the hard-driverust collector wrote:umm can you start mplayer from the menu?

I also installed VLC player, and the same thing happens.
I'm going to pull that drive, and put in another drive.
This Samsung drive has been a problem even with Windows upgrades. When people upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 8, they needed to update the firmware for the drive. I tried to update the firmware for the drive using WINE, because Samsung did not have an update to support Linux. Well Wine failed to flash the drive.
Samsung has done nothing for Linux support of this drive.

Just got it working.
I had to enable the multimedia repo, and (re)install w32codecs, and libdvdcss2
Works fine now...

Everything works now, I can read, and write DVD's and CD's now. __{{emoticon}}__
Music, Movies, Data anything I may need. __{{emoticon}}__
I did lose one thing lightscribe, But I never used the feature anyway. So it's not a big loss.
