I will test with 686 but I do not believe it will work. I am still believeing I have a kernel problem between antiX and my laptop. __{{emoticon}}__
I will test other distros with your procedure as you are doing right now. __{{emoticon}}__

Hi Wayne and Rocky
Finally I could not install antiX M8.5 (686 and/or 486) on my two old IBM and Vaio Laptops __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__ , but I could arrived to antiX M8.2 as LiveCD on the two Laptops __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__ and only could finish the HDD install on the Vaio Laptop __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__ , on the IBM Laptop I am still haveing other problems during the HDD install __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__ .
I have a question: when during the LiveCD I clicked the antiX button and then I could see a very long menu, but, but when I finished all the HDD installetion, when I click the antiX button I only see a very small menu, only 3 options, is it normal?? __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__

Finally, about M8.5 my conclusion is, by some reasons my two Laptops are haveing some Kernel problems using M8.5 __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__ .
Now I am going to see if I could do an upgrade from M8.2 to M8.5 as in Ubuntu __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__
Thank you and regards

You know what lorue? Your post just triggered something in my head.

I could never get the newer Puppy Linux Distros to boot after installing on my IBM A22m.
The newer Puppy distros run a newer kernel and I always ended up with a"can't find Puppy sfs file" during boot up with newer kernel. Older Puppy Like Dingo 4 would boot just fine. Seemed to be some incompatibility with IBM Thinkpads and some newer kernels. Not all kernels. Just certain ones. Because AntiX 8.5 2.6.32-1 mepis smp booted OK (I used cdrom install) but I needed acpi=force to kernel line to shutdown all the way.

Later I tried upgrading Kernel in AntiX 8.5 2.6.32-1 to liqourix 2.6.35 which would only boot up in slim when logged in as root. So I did not use it. Tried the other liqourix kernels like 2.6.34 with the same slim login problems. Ended up using Stevos 2.6.34 kernel on that laptop for AntiX 8.5.

Post your /etc/apt/sources.list before trying apt-get dist-upgrade. You might have to change things in your sources.list to upgrade to AntiX 8.5. Just a suggestion.

I am trying to install M8.5 on old laptops, vaio sony pcg-fx776 with pentium III, 2 usb ports and 128k ram
and IBM thinkPad A20m with pentium I, one usb port and 64k ram.
Both laptops without internal CD unit, do not work. Both with other distros working, Vaio(puppy and knoppix), IBM(slitaz and knoppix).

I re-read your first post and read this new update.
May be your 64M (k?) RAM gave you the problem on installation.
Do you have a chance to just increase it to 128M? may be it will help on installation.

Another thing just come to my mind, when you copy iso file to hard disk partition, have you tried using ext2 instead of ext3 used by most procedure? Just some thought.

I have a question: when during the LiveCD I clicked the antiX button and then I could see a very long menu, but, but when I finished all the HDD installetion, when I click the antiX button I only see a very small menu, only 3 options, is it normal?? __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__

I am not too sure what you meant.
My observation is, before I install, when I am on LiveCD mode, there are a lot of options.
After installation, upon first reboot, I have only one line, one selection of antiX.
On subsequent boot, there are a lot more selections added onto the boot menu.

Lorue, Anti or one of the other members will have to tell you how to edit your /etc/apt.sources.list. I am too chicken or I would show you my pre-upgrade AntiX 8.5 /etc/apt/sources.list on my Panasonic CF-48 Laptop which I have not booted for months.

The reason I am chicken is I don't want to be responsible for borking your hard earned install. So be patient and wait till Anti or some other more knowledgeable member weighs in on what to put in your /etc/apt/sources.list.

Hi Wayne
Thank you for your comments.
About 64M (k __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__ ) of memory, sorry but No __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__ I do not have chance. __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__
I will test using ext2.

Hi Rocky
No problem if you help me with the sources.list file __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__ . You know more than I and I trust you __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__ . Finally if there are problems I could reinstall antiX M8.2 __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__ . There are more important problems in the world to be worried than this, by example poverty, as you mention. I will wait your instructons. __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__

This is a stock AntiX 8.5 Upgrade Iso sources.list with a small modification made by me. I commented out goggles music manager source for 2 reasons. Reason 1 is I don't think goggles music manager came in AntiX 8.2. 2nd reason is the repository for it is dead anyhows. Feel free to comment out"#" the liqourix kernels if you so wish. Those kernels never worked on my older IBM A22m anyhows. They won't install though unless you tell em to though.

# MEPIS 8 series.
# Uncomment all MEPIS repos shown here to install headers and linux-kbuild
# from MEPIS repo for MEPIS kernel. Then comment back once installed.

Now for the scary part. Make a backup of your old sources.list. Then make a new /etc/apt/sources.list with file above. Then as root in terminal.

Code: Select all

apt-get update
when done use

Code: Select all

apt-get dist-upgrade
Pay attention to what get removed before you say yes. I gave you the upgrade sources.list
because of a wicd thing where wicd wants a user named demo (in the pre-upgrade AntiX 8.5 sources.list) to be there when it upgrades to newer version. Not sure how this might turn out on a upgrade from AntiX 8.2.
Unknown territory for me. I was a tester for 8.5. So I blew away my 8.2 installs and just went with the beta 8.5 installs. Never tried what you are going to try you see. __{{emoticon}}__
