I have a problem with apt-get update. I think it has to do with an install I tried with gdebi. The install went fine, but a window was left open for a long time, so I killed it.

I think that may have been a mistake, because the following is the result of an apt-get update now.

Code: Select all

What I've tried so far: deleted the contents of /var/lib/apt/lists and deleting the lock files in /var/cache/apt/archive and /var/lib/apt/lists. Also deleting and recreating the"partial" direction inside of /var/lib/apt/lists.

So I'm looking for thoughts...

THanks.

/var/log/dpkg.log could enlighten you as to whatever it was you killed.

Thanks...I will check that out.

I know, at least the error message is awesome!

DO. what if you ping the various addresses?
as root:
ping ftp.us.debian.org
does it resolve to an IP address and reply to the request?

It almost seems like you have an invalid dns setting.... maybe try 4.2.2.2 or 8.8.8.8

DNS was also my first thought. I'm using 8.8.8.8 already, and I've also tried my default DNS from our ISP.

pinging works fine. I don't think its a dns issue.

An idea that may not identify the cause but might help narrow down the scope of the problem.

Boot up live using a known good live media
Does apt-get update work?
If no the problem is not in your local system
If yes the problem is in your local system

From the live system copy one repo entry verbatim to the sources list in your installed system
Comment out all other entries in the installed sources list
Boot the installed system
Does apt-get update work?

If yes comment out the transferred live entry
Uncomment the only the equivalent entry in the installed sources list
Does apt-get update work?

If no the problem is related to the format of the entry or apt+friends
If yes uncomment a further entry and repeat the test.

Live media and an alternate os install apt-get update fine.

I wish I saw your post earlier. I just started a restore from very recent backup (using antix-snapshot incidental).

FYI the sources entries have not been modified and still match. If the problem comes back (and since I'm going to be installing the same things I installed when this happened last nite, they might) I will go through these steps.

Thanks.

I think the problem was with gdebi installing google-chrome-stable from the chrome website. I've now installed it three times, and twice gdebi has hung and refused to close. Although only once did it do whatever happened earlier that prevented me from updating. Google-chrome has always installed though.
