Hi,
My name is Michael and I am currently Distro hopping looking for a home for my 13yr. old"NEC ready." it is a Pentium 11, 333mghts, 168MG of ram and a 6 gig hard drive. I have tried Puppy on it and DSL, (which I don't think has support anymore). Couple questions I have about AntiX are is it Debian based. Can you use Apt-get? And in your opinion, do you think it has enough horsepower to run AntiX? Thanks. (looking forward to maybe being a future user of this distro) __{{emoticon}}__

Hi Michael:

Welcome to AntiX! I have Antix8 running on several machines, even an old Dell laptop (Inspiron 7500; 256 MB) that's 10 years old. Antix runs great in that box, so I think you have a pretty good chance in yours. It's certainly worth a try.

Yes, Antix is Debian based and you can use apt-get.

Good luck! Post how it goes, it's always interesting.

Thanx Pedro,
I'll give it a shot. I only have 168MG of ram, but who knows?

You may want to install the antiX-M8-base version and then add build upwards adding whatever apps you need.

antiX-base comes with X, fluxbox, iceweasel, and all the MEPIS tools so installation is a breeze.

Well I installed the"base system" via CD. I ended up on the text login screen. How do you login? In other words, what username and password should you use since you are logging in off of the live CD? Thanks, Michael

Michael:
If you are running antix off the live-CD, try:

user = demo
password = demo

Once you install it in the hard drive, you will be given an option of setting up your own username and password. At least this is the case with full Antix. I haven't played with Antix Base for a long time.

I hope this helps.

Hi Michael!

I have AntiX-M8 running on a Pentium II laptop with 128 MB, I'm not sure how fast it is - 233 MHz springs to mind but I'm not sure.

It works fine for most things, just a bit slow to render web pages in Iceweasel and it won't show Flash videos (e.g. YouTube) which is a pity because this machine was just able to do that when I had it running MEPIS 6.5. None of this is a problem for me because this machine a pretty much a backup for me, along with allowing me to get a bit of experience with Linux.

That's pretty much my specks also. I am trying to go with just the base system and build up from there. Like you, it is just a hobby box for working with Linux. I don't care about movies or flash video. I figure for those things my P-4 Gateway can take care of. Did you install from base or full system. Just want to know what I'm in for. Thanks __{{emoticon}}__

I installed the full system.

Everything went fine except for the sound though I did get that working reasonably easily thanks to some help

and on the MEPIS Lovers forum (links are in the thread above). Even the USB wireless adaptor worked out of the box so I'm really happy and impressed!

Good Luck!
