Does anyone have an idea why some pdf files open normally and some will not open? Is this just an anomaly?

I think that xpdf that is used in antiX-M7.01 has 'problems' opening 'complex' pdf files. antiX-M7.5 uses another lightweight pdf viewer epdfview. You should be able to install it via synaptic and it should work better.
