I'm running Antix 16/64 bit, and I cannot find a music player application I can get to play an ogg stream and a pls stream, e.g.,

, None of the full featured ones will. Clementine and Rhythmbox won't play any internet radio stations at all, including the ones that come with the packages; Goggles won't; Audacious won't; Gnome Mplayer won't; xmms2d doesn't seem to be in the repository, so qmmms2 won't work. Xmms will play ogg, but not pls, and won't store a list of stations. Firefox will play pls, but not ogg. I've put in all the gstreamer plugins that I can find, good, bad, and ugly. What am I missing? Thanks in advance.

Finally, after running through multiple applications, I have found that Audacious will indeed play both. What that means to me is that the correct plugins are in place. I've dealt with Linux sound apps before, and it's messy, but why won't the other apps pick up the installed correct plugins?

Here are some additional apps for your consideration. Idunno which of 'em can, specifically, play"ogg streams and pls streams".
For the apps which are available as packages from debian repositories, you can (should) visit

and search by packagename, taking note of any listed rec (recommended) (vs"depends on") packages.
Toward avoiding bloat, antiX is pre-configured to not auto-install"recommended" packages.
For a given player app, you may need to manually select, and install, one or multiple additional"recommended" app-specific plugin packages.

Thanks, Skiddoo, that gives me some things to research. Linux audio is complex, and I'd like to understand it better. I at least have one working application now.skidoo wrote: Here are some additional apps for your consideration. Idunno which of 'em can, specifically, play"ogg streams and pls streams".

mpv plays both those links in a terminal.
As does moc.
So does xmms
All installed on antiX.

Thanks, anticapitalista, but what I want to figure out is why Clementine, Rhythmbox, Gnome Player, and Exaile don't work and Audacious, mpv, moc, and xmms do. I feel that I need to compile a list of what program needs what plugins, and eventually I may do that. If I'm successful, I'll post it here for other's use.anticapitalista wrote: mpv plays both those links in a terminal.

Don't forget to check gstreamer versions. Some apps will require gstreamer0.10 and some will need gstreamer1.0 ( this applies to jessie-based repos...not stretch based.)frogprince wrote:Thanks, anticapitalista, but what I want to figure out is why Clementine, Rhythmbox, Gnome Player, and Exaile don't work and Audacious, mpv, moc, and xmms do. I might be missing something here. But
When I listen to KikNovak .ogg radio station. No problemo either. As far as those heavy media centers. I don't even bother using them
Xmms will play ogg, but not pls,

post#7 was the bottom post when I started drafting this, so scusa if some of the following is redundant

That same info is also available via the synaptic package manager ui; browsing online is quicker/easier to jump around by following hyperlinks.
You can notice that the"audacious","xmms2","mpv", and"moc" packaging has most/all the l'il bits declared as hard dependencies.
recommended troubleshooting steps:
Install package"python-beautifulsoup", then retry ogg stream playback.
If the above doesn't solve, install"gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad" and"gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly" (if currently absent on your system), then retry.
If still no joy, obtain+install from wheezy-backports repository"gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg" and retry
-----"gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg", I haven't tested whether that is installable on my antiX+jessie system. You may find that dpkg detects a conflict, and prevents its installation.
rhythmbox
recommended troubleshooting steps:
Install package"rhythmbox-plugins" (if currently absent on your system), then retry.
If the above doesn't solve, install"gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad" and"gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly" (if currently absent on your system), then retry.
----- note: these are separate from, DIFFERENT from, the"version 0.10" libraries mentioned above, for exaile ----
clementine
recommended troubleshooting steps:
Ensure the appropriate"0.10" sound server connector ("gstreamer0.10-alsa" --or --"gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio") is installed on your system.
AFAIK, presence of both"gstreamer1.0-plugins-*" and"gstreamer0.10-plugins-*" doesn't cause conflicts (breakage)but... back in the day,
the application developers and package maintainers probably decided to keep those versioned components optional, to minimize the potential of future breakage.
For each package, dpkg already provides a list, e.g."xmms2"and why Audacious, mpv, moc, and xmms do
[. . .]
compile a list of what program needs what plugins,

So, we may have a system problem. When I try to install"gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad:i386", Synaptic tells me that that package set is broken. Running Edit/Fix Broken Packages doesn't help, nor does reloading the packages. Might this be a Debian bug?
