LXF have run a beauty contest for Linux distros in the June edition

And the ratings in the Light-Weight (Slim packages that are useful for powering old hardware) category ARE: (drum roll)

Code: Select all

Distro............Rating...Verdict.
.Puppy.............09.......Easily the best distro for hardware past its prime
.Bohdi.............09.......A minimal simple distro that's easy on the eyes
.Fuduntu...........08.......A strange mix of the traditional & the new
.Sparky............08.......Lightweight distro that'll perform well even on semi-retired computers
.[0O]antiX (us?)...08.......Good zippy distro for old machines & users who find Puppy too esoteric (that's me!)
.CrunchBang........08.......Snappy Debian-based distro that works well on older machines & can easily be fleshed out for relatively newer ones
.Zenwalk (Ugh!)....07.......Fast distro with some modern apps & an old school appeal
.Porteus...........07.......Ideal for installation on removable media although using it effectively involves a learning curve
.Slitaz............06.......Requires learning some new skills but a good lightweight distrofor experienced users
.Slax..............06.......Similar in design to Porteus but currently lacks apps
.aLinux............06.......An odd mix of old & new software that wouldn't workk on every old machine
.DSL...............06.......Because of its steep learning curve it's only recommended for people who need to fuse life into old hardware
.Tiny Core.........06.......Will perform on the oldest of hardware, but setting it up requires time
I am assuming that the '0' (zero) or 'O' (alpha) is an aberration and does not refer to a re-spin or a name change. Unless someone says anything to the contrary, I'll e-mail LXF and ask for a correction. It's only by chance I spotted our inclusion.

I quite liked fuduntu lite, which I found a week or so ago, and it did work well enough, and it was well setup.

oh well, I wonder what I will"replace" it with?

Where did the"O" come from in"OAntiX" ? Was that a typo, reproduced in the first page index too?

I have AntiX on an old PC, and I mean a Pentium II, just for fun. In GUI mode it is too slow but I just use it as a terminal. It is a slimmed version of Mepis (both are based on Debian) which ironically is not mentioned.

But why did they put"Ultimate Edition" in the"beginner-friendly" when they describe it as"disorienting .... comprehensive ... can confuse users"?

I am also suprised how dismissive they are of CentOS :"Nearly superceded by alternatives lke scientific Linux". In Distrowatch : Centos 11th, Scientific 46th. CentOS is a fixture in the corporate server world - I believe that Netcraft runs on it for example.

Scientific has been rather quicker to get out new versions than CentOS which may be more significant for enterprise users who probably don't search Distrowatch.

Yes - this OantiX displeased me too. It was by chance that I found it (having been v. cross that antiX hadn't rated a mention). Also (oops) Fuduntu has shut up shop apparently!

Correction please!

In a fast moving age, don't dismiss old technology - like an old car, it still works! ( -- did I really say that -- ooer!)

Mepis hasn't had a stable release since 2011 and only had alpha releases in 2012. AntiX is a different matter. It serves a different audience and is a regularly updated.

We categorised the distros as per their developers intended audience. UE is meant for users used to Windows with absolutely no knowledge of how things are done in Linux-land. I just don't like their approach.

We're not being dismissive of CentOS. Just stating facts, and like johnhudson points out, the Scientific project churns out releases soon after the RHEL release.

Cheers!

Bummer! But I hear they are planning another distro based on OpenSUSE.

That explains a lot between AntiX and Bohdis rating in the chart.
Biased anyone? __{{emoticon}}__

E17 is just so easy to use. I oughta know being a MacPup team member. (I am being tongue in cheek here)
It is very pretty though. Oh well. They are doing the heavy lifting on the magazine.
Who am I to be sitting on the sidelines making fun.

Bad roky. __{{emoticon}}__
