my old 2150us laptop would never un MX14/15 but after downloading the feb monthly iso and installing it it all works except that when I shutdown the laptop does not power off.

NO, I wish. this is my old Compaq 2150US has an Athlon XP and 512mb ram

Ok. Back when I had my IBM A22M. Which also had 512 MB of ram with a celeron 1000HZ processor.
I needed to as acpi=force to the end of my kernel line to completely shutdown.
But that was back when we used grub legacy instead of grub 2.

Edit: searching and reading up on your laptop. You can run 1gig of ram in it for better performance.

I see some models came with intel celeron and I guess some came with amd cpus.

I will try acpi=force when I get home, I think I had to do this with another distro.

can I add acpi=force to grubs config using the grub repair tool?

You should be able to do so: general settings tab, kernel parameters section, place it after"quiet" and save.
