Sorry friends, but I have other issue.

On my new HP nx6310 install the fan is all the time noisy.

In my other partition with Antix 13.2 everything is working well.

Any solution?

Not a resolution, just a link to another post about temperature and fan issues in antiX-15.

Thanks SamK,

the problem was the kernel, I installed the 3.7.10-antix.5.486-smp kernel and it's working fine.

The temperature is higher with this kernel in antiX15, now around 60º-65º C ; in antiX 13.2 around 55º-60º C

The Ram usage in JWM when boots is 49Mb in 13.2 ; for antiX 15 is 63Mb.

Advices?

It is good to hear you found an answer.

In view of this post
grub-boot-screen-fails-to-update-alternative-kernel-t5763.html
It will be interesting to know if the newly installed kernel was automatically added to your GRUB boot screen.
If not what was your approach to adding it?

antiX-15 does not try to be as lean and mean as antiX-13.2. It has moved towards loading eye-candy and bling as defaults.

To list what is loaded, as root run

Code: Select all

ps_mem.py
Two easy wins can be gained by preventing the automatic loading of:
  • fbxkb
  • search for highlighted text (shown as yad by ps_mem.py)
Together these total almost 8MB RAM

Control Center-->Session-->Global Desktop Session
Comment the lines
  • fbxkb &
  • search-bar-icon &
Reboot

A further approx 2.5MB RAM can be saved by preventing fbcondecor loading the console decoration. Ensure the boot parameter
splash=off is added to your GRUB boot command.

Hi SamK,

after install the linux-image kernel + linux-headers kernel I did as root

Code: Select all

update-grub2
In grub, in the second line ("Advanced options for antiX") press enter and you can select all the kernels installed.

About Ram usage, yes I commented the lines

fbxkb &
search-bar-icon &

(I hate flags...)

I have problems with all the kernels above 3.7.10-antix.5 __{{emoticon}}__

Where is the kernel 3.7.10-antix.7?

This was the recommended kernel for the 13.2 release. Is not longer available?

This machine runs smooth with this kernel in the other partition.

Try the following command to list available antiX 32bit kernels suitable for a machine with small amount of physical RAM (includes proprietary elements)

Code: Select all

apt-cache search linux | grep '^linux-[image headers]' | grep antix | grep -E -v 'gnu|pae'

Thanks SamK,

the kernel 3.7.10-antix.7.smp is not listed.

After to try lots of kernels the best results are for the 3.7.10-antix.5.smp but antiX15 with this kernel is a bit hotter than antiX13.2.

I doubt that it will make much difference to the machine temperature but you could try a Debian kernel.

List available Debian 32bit kernels suitable for an older machine with a small amount of physical RAM

Code: Select all

apt-cache search linux | grep '^linux-[image headers]' | grep 486 | grep -v antix

I did but the cpu got crazy after a while, also I could not control the brightness screen.

I will continuous testing the temperature.

OK for those that wish to run the 13.2 kernel in 15 it should be moved into the main jessie/15 repos now.

I thought it was just me. On my new Dell 14""Ubuntu" latptop with a Pentium N3450, it is almost unbearably hot underneath. It is stone cold with other distros. I'm on around my 5th hour (straight) of trying to make a powersave governor activate and hopefully cool it down, but is just will not work no matter what method I try. cpufeq/d, intel_pstate, all fail to actually work.
