On all three different systems I cant get the sound to work in iceweasel on youtube-videos with the html5 player, so I think I'm missing something.
With flashplayer sound is working ,but on all three different boxes with conmpletely different graphiccards YouTube controls are shown scrambled in Iceweasel.

This is what I get from the html5-player side

What I tried so far: Installed gstreamer-plugins bad, base, good, ugly

Set to true in about:config: media.mediasource.enabled, media.fragmented-mp4.exposed, media.fragmented-mp4.ffmpeg.enabled, media.gstreamer.enabled
But still no sound with html5.
Some one has an idea what is missing?

No. Just posting to let you know you are not the only one woth scrambled controls in youtube taskbar and html5 no sound in Iceweasel.

I did the same with media edits in about:config on one box where I fxed it. But that thread I replied to showing my screenshots of about:config is lost somewhaere and i cannot remember the name of the thread. I was the only responder and I posted a lot of screenshots in that thread. it had something to do with watching a certain video site on the net. I stayed at it for hours till I solved it.

But I can't remember the thread to fix my other boxes with the same symptoms you describe with html5 in AntiX 15 iceweasel so I use pepperflash instead or flashplayernonfree instead. Pepperflash does not scramble the youtube task bar like you describe.

Sorry I am not much help this morning.

the easiest thing to try is to update iceweasel. mozilla has been rolling out better html5 support, starting around version 43 or so.

edit as root

/ etc/apt/sources.list.d/various.list

and find the iceweasel entry. change it to this to keep on the stable channel, but with updates.

Code: Select all

# Latest iceweasel (australis)
deb http://mozilla.debian.net/ jessie-backports iceweasel-release
do an apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade and you should get a newer iceweasel with better html5 support.

Dolphin_oracle, I updated iceweasel like you suggested but unfortunately still no sound.

So I downloaded chromium and there sound functioned.

For me this could be a solution. My daughters are used to firefox, so I think they prefer iceweasel.

Try deleting the hidden .mozilla folder in your home folder to get rid of any manual settings that may be conflicting.

What I had to do was not use sound card 1 , but call out 2 instead.
I wrote a quick .asoundrc with the following contents , and have it in my /home/user directory.
defaults.pcm.!card PCH
defaults.ctl.!card PCH
Everything else worked but youtube video sounds.
I tried crazy combos of fixes and no luck.
I then found pulseaudio in synaptic , figured what the heck and installed it.
Did no configuration to pulseaudio at all and everything just works.
Beats me why , but top shows pulseaudio running when I run any video and it works great.
I guess I don't need to understand why , it just worked for me.

Yes, pulseaudio did the trick for me too.Just wanted to write this , when I saw your post, cwilliams.

I installed pulseaudio and went back to iceweasel 38.6.0esr-1~deb8u1 and didn't have to make any changes in about:config or anything else.Sound is working with html5-player.

Thank you again.

Cool!
I'm running Iceweasel 38.5.0 .
Maybe someone could chime in and explain why pulseaudio works , I don't have a clue.....
I like Iceweasel best also , just use Chrome to watch Netflix episodes.
Good deal.

I use alsa in antix 15-base, on a fresh install i do:

Code: Select all

# alsactl init
$ alsamixer (tune my sound level)
# alsactl store
#reboot

SLIGHTLY OFF TOPIC

@cwilliams
cwilliams wrote:What I had to do was not use sound card 1 , but call out 2 instead.

A potential alternative approach...

There is a system wide ALSA configuration in /etc/asound.conf.
Perhaps this might have been used rather than creating a configuration file in the user home area.

Abstract

Code: Select all

head --lines 13 / etc/asound.conf

# -------
# Primary
# -------

# Re-set up default device
pcm.!default {

   # Audio card/chip to use
   # In most cases this setting should remain commented (#)
   # When commented card 0 is usually automatically selected
   # When uncommented the card corresponding to the number is selected
   #control.card 0

The available sound cards can usually be listed using the aplay command with the lowercase L parameter

Code: Select all

aplay -l
To use the new configuration you would need to disable (rename or move) your .asoundrc file and restart the ALSA service. Probably the way of doing that with the most certainty is a reboot.

Not saying this would have resolved your problem, just that it is an alternative approach that may have saved some work when trying to specify an alternative sound card.
