Big news for those of us who want really light but capable applications for the new version of antiX 8: There's a new Ted word processor available! This app had been stuck at 2.17 for the longest time (usable, but full of peculiar little bugs, cumbersome menus, and weird fonts). It seems that all these glitches have been fixed. It looks good, works fast, and has about all the word-processing features that basic users will need. I love Abiword, especially for file converson. But for basic RTF composing, you can't beat the new Ted. It installs easily from a single file. Go to:

Get the deb version: Ted_2.20_i386.deb

Try it out.

Please, puhleeeze consider this for antiX 8!

I have tried it out, and it really looks like a promising wordprocessor. Lightweight too, easy to install, configure and with interesting features. But I have to try it out, to see how it compares to Abiword and others. Malanrich, thanks for the tip!

Ted (US version) will be included.
(Not enough space to install other languages I'm afraid)

After comparing applications like Abiword, Ted, and WordGrinder, I have to say that--if you do a lot of writing--you need them all (not to mention Open Office!). Each has its own uses. The thing about Abiword is that so many of its dependencies seem difficult to keep sorted out each time a new version becomes available. But Ted works on every box I've got (even on a P1 w/ 28MB of RAM running DSL!) and, in a pinch, has all the functions you'd need for basic academic work.

I've discussed one change with the developer of the new Ted: you can't alter default font (Helvetica 12 pt.). It seems oversized and bloated to me. But if you reduce the magnification of the display from %120 to %100 in the config file, it looks okay. You can also set individual document fonts manually. Later I think this will be solved with introduction of templates.

Of course we can't have all these apps in the standard issue of antiX, but maybe we should have a forum category for cataloguing and discussing light applications that users would want to add to their install.

Sounds like a good idea to me.
