antiX MX-14 pae went on with no problems and I was able to configure it quickly to my liking. Special thanks to anti and his team for a lovely job with this project. It has great promise.

My only major problem was a lack of audio, something I experienced previously on this machine (System 76 Kudu prof.) when I installed Slackware 14.1. It seems that the system comes up specifying the wrong default audio card so we have to tell it which card to use as the default. As it turns out the Slackware HowTo also solved my MX-14 problem. So if you have no sound go to SlackDocs/Howtos/Hardware and look for"Sound Problems On Slackware." Follow along and that should help your situation as it did mine.

Audio problems is something I also had (plus a few others). On both this forum and the MEPIS Community forums we have looked to see what the problems were.

You show 2 different sound cards in inxi. I would make sure alsamixer was pointing to the Intel Haswell HD Audio Controller with the F6 key in alsamixer and then make sure nothing was muted in alsamixer also.

You can get into alsamixer with the alsamixer command in terminal.

It was pointed at default - changed it to Intel Haswell
S/PDIF showed as MM - toggled Mute off now shows green and 00
S/PDIF 1 and S/PDIF 2 show as 00 also

Still no sound.

My bad. __{{emoticon}}__ This is a AntiX thread and you are running MX-14.

So do this instead in terminal

Code: Select all

speaker-test

Also. Just a suggestion. You would be better off starting a thread and posting at

Here is what i get on the speaker-test
speaker-test

speaker-test 1.0.25

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 1 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1018:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Playback open error: -2,No such file or directory
When I run lscpi, I get
00:03.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation Haswell HD Audio Controller (rev 06)
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 1942
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 51
Memory at d0910000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable)
Capabilities: <access denied>
Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation Lynx Point High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04)
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 1942
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 49
Memory at d0914000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable)

Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel

I figured that the AntiX forum would be a better place to get help than the Mepis forum. Was I mistaken?

There are just more members at MX-14 forums that can put more eyes on your problem.
That was why I suggested it.
Do you also have hdmi on this
Machine: System: Hewlett-Packard product: HP ProBook 450 G1 v: A3009DD10303
Mobo: Hewlett-Packard model: 1942 v: KBC Version 89.10
Bios: Hewlett-Packard v: L74 Ver. 01.08 date: 02/13/2014

Because to be honest. I am out of ideas on what to suggest next in this thread.
Because we seem to be getting into /var/lib/alsa/asound.state
and your equipment is new to me. Hence my suggestion for MX-14
forum as some members there run newer gear than I do.

Cool. I just booted my MX-14 Laptop to check something. It is a older one than your I7 so alsa works out of the box OK.
Maybe you need pulseaudio installed to get yours working. I'd ask on Mepis forums though 1st before installing though.

Code: Select all

$ apt-cache policy pulseaudio
pulseaudio:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 4.0-6~bpo7+1
  Version table:
     4.0-6~bpo7+1 0
        500 http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ wheezy-backports/main i386 Packages
     2.0-6.1 0

Thanks for the suggestion. Will try it out at some point. I also installed Kwheezy just to get a sanity check.

Same issue with an additional twist - it wouldn't recognize the Atheros WiFi chipset. I have a support e-mail in to those folks as well. Let us see if any suggestions come out of that avenue.

What is the output of

Code: Select all

ifconfig
