I've been experimenting with a different tiling window manager (different from dwm, that is), called musca

It's somewhat more versatile than dwm in that I can control the splits (vertical or horizontal) a little easier. No desktops are pre-defined though (unlike dwm and others) but different programs on the screen can be"grouped" together and different groups can be created. I haven't experimented with this option yet.

The screenshot enclosed shows iceweasel, vim in a terminal, R (Stats software) in another terminal and xmms. Background was set from login picture.

the default is tiling, but it can be set to stacking so that the mouse can resize the windows.

I'll keep fooling with it to see how it compares to dwm. One thing I have not been able to run yet is conky, which runs fine in dwm.
