I read the thread in Tips and Tricks about mounting floppy, usb, etc, but I am not able to mount my usb stick or my external firewire drive. That thread starts out with USB mounts beautifully. But when I plug in my USB stick or my firewire drive, I don't get anything in /media that wasn't already there. Anti's post, the second post of that thread (thread 64) says to Choose rox-pinboard and panel options (if not already set by default). I opened rox and went to the panel options, plugged in my usb stick, but still no new entries appeared in /media. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Does the USB drive mount if you do:

# mount /dev/sdb1 /media/sdb1

Yes, and after doing that I can copy a file from the usb stick but I can't copy a file to the usb stick:

Permission denied
Failed to copy '/home/steve/Documents/Lysistrata'

Done

Did some googling and got the problem solved, good enough anyway. I'll post the findings in case it helps someone else new to antiX that is used to automatic mounting.

Prior to plugging in the usb stick or external hard drive, look in the sd region of /dev:

then plug the stick or drive and repeat the above command, take note of what is new, (like sdb and sdb1). Might take a second or two, repeat the command until something new appears.

Mount the stick with the following command, assuming sdb and sdb1 is what appeared new. Otherwise adapt the command:
Use rox to navigate to /media/sdb1 and copy your files in either direction. Or use terminal or mc.

All I can find for unmounting requires root:
There may be better or more convenient ways. I don't know.

I'm not having these issues. My usb stick auto-mounts fine under /media/it'sname. I can copy files back and forth as user and to remove I right click and select eject. When the stick 'dissappears' from rox I pull it out.

I have had issues with certain sticks not mounting. Older cruzer mini, but that's it.

That is interesting. So far i've just tried one lexar stick and an external lacie firewire hard drive. I had to use pmount to mount both of them. I am using a rosewill usb/fw card, my old computer only had usb1. Maybe that is the reason. However, my lexar stick didn't automount using the built in usb1 ports either. I'll borrow and try some other usb sticks tonight.

I just tried a Cruzer Mini 32mb. Found it in /media and was able to access it no problem. Right-click and eject worked great.

bucolicbuffalo, you are right. I got a SimpleTech stick and it mounts and ejects perfectly, automatically. The lexar still doesn't mount automatically, so it is just something about that stick. Sorry for the confusion.

are the sticks maybe formatted ntfs? or windows xp or vista? that could be the problem too.

I beleive most sticks are fat32 and fat16. My two sticks are both fat16. The one that doesn't mount automatically will mount manually. I don't know why?

I just checked mine on a windows machine. The lexar (the one that mounts manually but not automatically) is FAT16 and the SimpleTech is Fat 32. I don't think that matters though. What is wierd and might matter is this: the Lexar came up in the Hard Disk Drives section and the SimpleTech came up in the Devices with Removeable Storage section. I had never really paid any attention to it before, but I don't think most USB sticks show up in the Hard Disk Drives section.

I noticed my USB stick (mp3 player) wont show up in /media if its plugged in before the OS boots. Even if I take it out and stick it in again it still wont show up.
But if I stick it in after booting, its noticed! __{{emoticon}}__

usb automounting is a bit up and down in antiX and Mepis.
I have 2 usb sticks that automount in /media correctly, as does my iriver mp3/ogg player, a friend's camera and mobile phone.
But another usb stick doesn't automount and neither does my usb hard-drive.
For them I have to manually mount or to fstab.
