I tried today to move some music files from a Ubuntu machine a few feet away via MC and SSH. It easily transferrer all the
directories, but not the files themselves; the directories were empty. I did select"Dive into Subdir if it exists", but to no
avail. Can someone give me a clue about what I'm missing? Thanks.

I have absolutely no idea whether this will work or not - BUT, in MC, access the User menu (should pop-up w. F2 - if it doesn't, click on 'Command' on the Menu Bar) and, 3rd item from the bottom, you'll see'copy file to remote host' (r). This leads to a Q & A on the command line. I reckon you should be able to tag your files on MC and then copy them from there.
There is something in the 'Directory Panels' subject of the Help Files which concerns the + (plus) symbol. This apparently governs the movement of files & directories. It wouldn't be a bad idea to look at it and see how it affects you.
Good luck
